In the last few years, the art world has seemingly embraced a more broadly
defined definition of contemporary visual art. New or redesigned structures
at the major international exhibitions (Venice, Sao Paulo, Istanbul,
Johannesburg,) have led to the emergence of artists from places that were
recently little known, and certainly not for their art production.
While this may or may not be so evident in the major galleries around the
world, New York remains a proving ground for emerging artists to test their
work and its reception within the art world. Consequently, New York
continues to draw from a flux of nationalities and ideas from all around the
world, as is the nature of New York City, since the 17th century. When
people speak of the American 'melting pot' New York is the place where that
phrase pays more than just 'lip service.' New York City, like the plethora
of artists participating on a world wide level in contemporary art right
now, is full of people from everywhere, as it has been for some time.
Coincidentally, this exhibition celebrates New York as a center of cultural
production with artists who are not native New Yorkers but who have taken
New York as 'home'.
