The Substation Gallery, Singapore

A powerful solo performance about Lust, Betrayal, Rage, Pride and Revenge. In this solo performance based on Euripides' classic text, Medea, Verena Tay seeks to understand the nature of rage by confronting the power of one woman's wrath. How far will a proud woman, betrayed by her husband, be driven to seek revenge, even at the expense of her children?

A powerful solo performance about Lust, Betrayal, Rage, Pride and Revenge

Performances from Thursday, 11 July, to Sunday, 14 July, 2002, 8.00pm

The story of Medea*, one of Western mythology's most controversial female characters, is still very much relevant today.
Look at how rage and revenge, however justified or provoked, still prevails in the 21st century - from the many cases of domestic violence and murder to the global arena of 9/11.

In this solo performance based on Euripides' classic text, Medea, Verena Tay seeks to understand the nature of rage by confronting the power of one woman's wrath.
How far will a proud woman, betrayed by her husband, be driven to seek revenge, even at the expense of her children? Is she sane/insane, justified/unjustified, to murder her husband's new wife and her own children in response to his second marriage?

To prepare for Medea: One on One, Verena carried out her own physical and vocal training for more than a year.
Since July 2001, Verena has been slowly devising the staging of Philip Vellacourt's script on her own, painstakingly finding the best ways to evoke the compelling passion of Medea.
Consequently, Verena will use a unique combination of voice, movement and Balinese topeng masks in the performance.
Stark and simple, Medea: One on One promises to engage and enthrall.

* The Legend of Medea
When Jason and the Argonauts sought the Golden Fleece from King Estes of Cochis, Medea, the King's daughter and a sorceress, fell in love with Jason. She agreed to use her magic to help Jason obtain the Golden Fleece, but on the condition that he married her. Having stolen the Golden Fleece, Jason and Medea fled from King Estes. To distract the King, Medea slew her own brother, dismembered the body and strewed the pieces in front of the King's path. Some years later, Jason and Medea, with their two sons, settled in the city of Corinth. Then Jason fell in love with Glauce, the Princess of Corinth, and married her. Frantic with jealousy, Medea used her magic and killed the Princess. To seek revenge on Jason, she also killed their two sons before fleeing to the city of Athens.
