Roni Horn

Hauser & Wirth New York, New York

An exhibition devoted exclusively to the drawings of artist. The show includes six new, large-scale works never before shown publicly. Up to eight by ten feet in size, these astoundingly complex and ultimately enveloping pieces form a group the artist has titled 'Else'. Horn's pigment drawings, which she began in the 1980s, have become increasingly large and more complex. These drawings continue the exploration of identity through doubling, repetition, and the paired form.

comunicato stampa

Beginning May 7th, Hauser & Wirth New York will present the first exhibition in the United States ever devoted exclusively to the drawings of artist Roni Horn. The show will include six new, large-scale works never before shown publicly. Up to eight by ten feet in size, these astoundingly complex and ultimately enveloping pieces form a group the artist has titled ‘Else.’ The exhibition will remain on view through June 19th.

Horn’s pigment drawings, which she began in the 1980s, have become increasingly large and more complex. Horn begins with two drawings of similar forms, which she refers to as ‘plates.’ The two plates are then brought together through a process of cutting and pasting to create a new form and identity. These drawings, like all of Horn’s photographic and sculptural installations, continue the exploration of identity through doubling, repetition, and the paired form.

The critic Paulo Herkenhoff wrote about Horn’s drawings: “No matter how dismembered a drawing might be, it is held together by different stages of nearness.”

About the Artist

Born in New York in 1955, Horn lives and works in New York. She received a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from Yale University. For more than thirty years, she has been developing work of concentrated visual power and intellectual rigor, often addressing issues of gender, identity and androgyny. Using sculptures, works on paper, photography, and books, Horn crafts complex relationships between the viewer and her work. Since 1975, Horn has traveled often to Iceland, whose landscape and isolation have strongly influenced her practice.

Roni Horn has received the CalArts/Alpert Award in the Arts, several NEA fellowships, and a Guggenheim fellowship. She has had
one-person exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Dia Center for the Arts, New York; and
Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, among others. Group exhibitions include the Whitney Biennial (1991, 2004); Documenta (1992); and Venice Biennale (1997), among others.

Roni Horn's solo exhibition 'Well and Truly' is currently on view at Kunsthaus Bregenz, Austria until July 2010. In November 2009,
the Whitney Museum of American Art opened 'Roni Horn aka Roni Horn,' an internationally acclaimed survey exhibition of the artist's work organized jointly with Tate Modern in London. The exhibition is currently on view at the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) in Boston through June 2010. The ICA is the fourth venue of this show after the Tate (February 25 – May 25, 2009), the Collection Lambert in Avignon (June 21 – October 4, 2009) and the Whitney.
