The Multicultural in Our Time

Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, Gyeonggi-do

An international exchange project between Gyeonggi Creation Center in South Korea and Le Pavillon in France. It is a timely project that problematizes the emergent issues of multiculturalism and societal phenomena in South Korea, such as diaspora and migrant labor. "The Multicultural in Our Time", an international exchange project between Gyeonggi Creation Center (GCC) in South Korea and Le Pavillon in France, is a collaborative project celebrating the opening of GCC, affiliated with Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art (Gyeonggi MOMA), and the 10th anniversary of Le Pavilion of Palais de Tokyo in Paris. GCC opened last October as an international art residency to support creative works and research by artists of all nationalities, with specialized programs focusing on global and local issues. Le Pavillon was established by a number of artists and critics, including the French artist Ange Leccia in 2001, and is one of the most prominent residencies and is recognized for its excellence in various programs for young artists.

"The Multicultural in Our Time" The subject of the project is especially significant in regards to the site-specificity of Ansan City, a multicultural hub where Gyeonggi MOMA and GCC are located. Four residency artists from GCC and eleven artists and curators from Le Pavillon have shared two workshops, one in Paris in December 2009 and the other in Ansan City in May 2010 under the leadership of Manu Park, a guest curator of the project.

Through research, survey, and discussions the workshops have focused on the multicultural background of Ansan City and the multi-layered modernity of South Korean society, especially Wongok-dong in Ansan city, an officially designated special multicultural zone where 60,000 migrant workers reside. The outcomes of the workshops are exhibited at Gyeonggi MOMA, featuring all the artworks that are produced in Ansan City. An outdoor project is also planned for the main plaza in Wongok-dong, presenting an off-site exhibition and various public programs in cargo containers. The exhibition and the outdoor project open on May 20th at Gyeonggi MOMA and the Children's Park Ⅲ in Wongok-dong, and the exhibition will remain on view at the museum until June 27th and the outdoor project until June13th. In addition, Gyeonggi MOMA will also host a film screening of directed by Renzo Martens.
