L'Exposition Lunatique

Kadist Art Foundation is pleased to announce the second exhibition to be drawn from its col- lection. In 2009, Jeremy Levison had proposed Capturing Time, an exhibition that addressed issues relating to time. This year, we would like to invite you to discover L’Exposition Lunatique curated by Rozenn Prat, one of the committee members of Kadist Art Foundation. L’Exposition Lunatique consists of a wandering between forms, ideas, words and projections becoming absurd and flawed at the same time.

We must experience these spaces, feel the clashing visions, the shifts and digressions, and through all these hypotheses, follow a futile and absolute hope. Like modern Icaruses, we will think the void, in order to stretch these new spaces, towards the conquest of the utopian. Reviving the myth of discovery, between the intelligible and the sensible, L’Exposition Lunatique emphasizes the attempt of being pioneers of the hypothetical. How could we live without what doesn’t exist?

About the curator
Rozenn Prat is a committee member of Kadist Art Foundation. She is a professor of Visual Arts and lecturer at the École Centrale Paris. She lives and works in Paris.

Exhibited works

Francis Alÿs
Francis Alÿs realizes paintings and numerous drawings on tracing paper which are often sketches for works to come. Even when there not realized yet, these drawings can stand on their own. They represent situations people walking with a lot of poetry, which is a reccurent action in the artist work. In the exhibition, four drawings and one painting will be presented. Francis Alÿs was born in 1958 in Antwerp, Belgium. He lives and works in Mexico City.

Kennedy Browne
Milton Friedman one the wonder of the free market pencil, 2009, is an installation based on 42 blank pages. On the first page, one can read the original version in English of the liberal speech of Milton Friedman on « The Story of the pencil ». On the other pages, it has been translated by using Google Translate tool into Chinese, Estonian, Arabic and so on, before coming back to English. The final page becomes much shorter than the original text and is not understandable.
This work has a evident political and social impact but it is presented here for its poetic dimension: how a linguistic journey produces a loss of information but also leads to new interpretations. The artists represented Ireland during the Venice Biennial in 2009, where this work was on view. Sarah Browne and Gareth Kennedy collaborate since 2005. They live and work in Dublin.

Jason Dodge
In Algeria, Djidjiga Meffrer wove a piece of cloth. She chose yarn as a material but was aked to use a dark blue color and to equal the distance from earth to the troposphere (12 km). Above the Weather ( 2007 ) is part of a series which were all made in various regions of the world, following these same instructions. Thanks to the weaving, this large distance can be apprehended in a concrete and visible way in a single glance. The resulting work made also echoes to the myths evolving around weaving techniques.
Jason Dodge was born in 1969 to Newton, Pennsylvania, the USA. He lives and works in Berlin.

Hans-Peter Feldmann
Feldmann’s work refers to daily life. He makes collages of pictures and everyday objects, guided by intuitions of language, experiences, and obsessions.
Three works, Hat with Photograph, Teapot and Shadow, Shoes with Eggs realized in 2009, are constituted by a combination of banal objects in which the feeling of the marvellous appears with humour. Hans-Peter Feldmann was born in 1941 in Düsseldorf. He lives and works in Düsseldorf.

Christoph Keller
Message to the Extraterrestrials ( 2007 ) consists of a slide projector beaming images into the side of a telescope. This mirror device projects the images through an open window to the world outside. The function of the telescope has been inverted and transformed from a receiver to a broadcaster of light. The images it projects are selected from the ‘Golden Record’ produced for the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 missions. These were intended to inform any extraterrestrials of life and culture on earth.
The Voyager missions (1977) and the Golden Record have become icons of Pop culture inspiring novels, songs and films. The ability or inability of an extraterrestrial being to understand the images broadcast is metaphorised in Keller’s work by the degradation of the image by its multiple refractions in the passage from mirror to mirror.

Julius Koller
Demonstrative Cultural Situation 1 (U.F.O.), 1989, and Demonstrative Cultural Situation 2 (U.F.O.), 1989, two black and white photographs, refer to the « U.F.O Gallery Ganek », a fictive contemporary art gallery that was founded and directed by the artist from 1971 to 1989.

Placed on the flat surface of the Ganek peak in the High Tatras Mountains of Czechoslovakia, the «U.F.O Gallery Ganek» should be, according to the artist, «a hard accessible fictive location for a thought communication of myself and other earthmen with the unknown cosmic world. With its «high» location, it symbolized an encounter of the earthly with the unearthly (the Earth and the Cosmos). The natural high-mountain environment becomes a psychological cultural space - a medium (between the Earth and the Heaven) where a new artistic thinking can shoot up.
Julius Koller was born in 1939 to Piestany. He died in 2007, while he lived and worked in Bratislava in Slovakia.

Anthony McCall
Landscape for Fire (1972) is a major work for Anthony McCall. This film recounts a very orchestrated performance where strange characters dressed in white, turn on lights in a vast flat landscape. The performance is carefully organized: braziers are lit and geometrically aligned in a precise temporal progression. A horn, playing on our perception of distance, suggests an uncanny scene based on the three elements: air, earth and fire.
In the exhibition, this film will be presented along a drawing which represents the score for a similar performance.
Anthony McCall was born in Great Britain in 1946. He lives and works in New York.

Roman Ondák
To produce Slow Down Journey (2003), Roman Ondák asked his family, friends and acquaitances to draw places that he visited during his travels or situations that he experienced when travelling. These drawings show Roman Ondák wandering through foreign cities or waiting at the airport. Memory holds a critical place in his work since it implies experience, the past and its meaning, but also because it opens the way for our imagination and the unconscious.
Roman Ondák was born in 1966 to Zilina in Slovakia. He lives and works in Bratislava in Slovakia.

Pratchaya Phinthong
If I dig a very deep hole (2007) represents two moons on a photgraphic negative inserted into a wall. The artist searched for the extreme opposite geographical point from Paris to draw a straight line across the globe. He went to photograph the full moon in the Chatham Islands (New Zealand) before coming to Paris to catch the same moment. Two places, diametrically opposed, two experiences, two different times but one moon is combined in this device. What remains from this experience is the evocation of a long journey restraint to its most simple apparatus. Pratchaya Phinthong was born in 1974 in Bangkok in Thailand. He lives and works in Bangkok.
