ForwArt was launched in 2000 by the BBL in its cultural centre with the goal of promoting international contemporary art in Belgium. For this second edition, fourteen young artists were selected by four international exhibition curators and were given the opportunity of producing new work.
The kind collaboration of the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts, the Palais des Beaux-Arts, the Bibliothèque Royale, the Ville de Bruxelles and other partners, has enabled the exhibition to leave its initial premises this year in order to explore the Mont des Arts : a historical urban site offering the artists a range of areas around the renowned Place Royale spaces in a library, a large brick wall, public gardens, museum halls, a commercial gallery, etc that have been kindling their imagination.
ForwArt invites its visitors to discover the many facets, including the most recent of contemporary art, through a series of works spanning the monumental, the architectural, intimist art, plastic art, conveying a poetic or social message. The artists use means of expression as varied as drawing, mural painting, photography, video, new media, billboards, installations and performance. Such diversity reveals a thirst for experimentation among these artists who come from all over the world, including Belgium itself.

Forwart 2002 is a contemporary art exhibition with an international scope, which will be held at the Mont des Arts in Brussels.

Forwart 2002 is an initiative of the Bank Brussels Lambert (BBL).

Together with BBL, ING Insurance, ING Car Lease, ING Lease and Record represent ING in Belgium. Present in 65 countries, ING's mission is to be a leading, global, client-focused and innovative provider of financial services.

Forwart 2002 translates, in the cultural realm, the ING openness to change and its global reach.

Quite often artists can only dream of materialising their projects. Precisely because they are either young or unknown to the general public, artists are obliged to acknowledge that technical and concrete requirements pertaining to the creation of their works of art are beyond their own resources.
Exhibitions often provide such artists with the encouragement they need and offer them the best opportunities to realise their ideas and projects.

For this reason in particular BBL developed, a few years ago, the concept of ForwArt. It hopes in this manner to create a biennial for international contemporary art in Belgium.

This year, for the second edition of ForwArt 2002, BBL has called on the co-operation of four curators with an international reputation: Lynne Cooke, Chris Dercon, Robert Fleck and Hans Ulrich Obrist. Together, they selected fourteen artists who were asked to create for ForwArt 2002 projects they have not yet been able to realise.
They are: Isabelle Arthuis, Mircea Cantor, Nico Dockx, Paul van der Eerden, Cerith Wyn Evans, Simyrn Gill, Arturo Herrera, Valérie Mréjan, Florian Pumhösl, Anri Sala, Andreas Siekmann, Tabaimo, Dolores Zinny and Juan Maidagan.

ForwArt 2002 is a group exhibition, but not in the conventional meaning of the term. Therefore, the curators have chosen artists from different generations and of different nationalities who, in their opinion, can specially benefit, in the short and long term, from this opportunity to produce a piece of work. The artists have not been given any thematic constraints. And although they all took thorough consideration of the actual premises, their works can exist elsewhere and in other contexts.

ForwArt 2002 allows the discovery of works of art realised as a unique and decisive milestone in the pursuit of the artists' creative activities.

This autumn ForwArt 2002 presents an exhibition generously scattered over eight locations, at the Mont des Arts in Brussels: Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts, Bibliothèque Royale, Place Royale, Terrasses of the Palais des Congrès, Lycée Dachsbeck and BBL's Cultural Centre.

ForwArt 2002 will be accessible from 27 September to 11 November 2002. The press conference and preview will be held on 26 September 2002. An exhibition catalogue will be published.
