Image at Work is an exhibition about the notion of work. It sets out from the idea of work as a fundamental human activity, our handling of the world around us. From this point of departure, the exhibition explores various aspects of work.

The works included in the exhibition examine issues of the changing structures and conditions of labour and work in general in our contemporary age as well as issues concerning artistic work and further how work can be represented in images. It also aims to view the meaning-creating processes that build contexts and a critical potential within an artistic work as a kind of the image's own work.

Work is a concept which, just like other hard-to-define and broad concepts, is often given different interpretations within various ideologically-charged structures. Thus, work has often been both deprecated and upgraded. In various contexts, work becomes synonymous with wage-earning, oppression, slavery and everyday gloominess, as well as with career, identity, self-fulfilment, or one's life's work. The view of work and the conditions in which it is performed affects our personal relationships, financial and political structures, city planning, gender-political issues and cultural policy. There are innumerable ways in which to approach the concept of work. The aim of the exhibition is neither to attempt to cover all these aspects, nor to disregard their importance, but to approach the topic from a slightly different perspective by regarding work as an activity that structures and transforms the world around us, sets boundaries and defines the self, society, the space, the city...

Image at Work is a project initiated by Xposeptember and realized in collaboration with BAC, Iaspis, Index – The Swedish Contemporary Art Foundation, Moderna Museet and the Romanian cultural institute.
