Art on Paper 2010

Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greensboro

The 41st Exhibition

comunicato stampa

Art on Paper 2010 features regional, national and international artists who have produced significant works made on or of paper. Since 1965, the Weatherspoon’s Art on Paper exhibition has charted a history of art through the rubric of one-of-a-kind works on paper. Since its inception, the commitment of xpedx (formerly the Dillard Paper Company) and The Dillard Fund has allowed the Weatherspoon to acquire works from each and every Art on Paper exhibition, resulting in the formation and tremendous growth of the Dillard Collection, which today numbers close to 550 objects. Acquisitions have included work by some of art’s seminal practitioners, including Louise Bourgeois, Brice Marden, Joan Mitchell, Robert Smithson, Frank Stella and Eva Hesse.

Museum acquisitions for Art on Paper are made possible through the generous support of xpedx and the Dillard Fund. Support for the exhibition and catalogue is generously provided by the F.M. Kirby Foundation, Inc.

Curated by Xandra Eden, this year's exhibition includes 75 artists of regional and international significance.

The 28-page Art on Paper 2010 catalogue, designed by Donna Wojek-Gibbs, includes selected images, an exhibition checklist, and curator’s statement.

Inquiring Eyes: Greensboro Collects Art

The Weatherspoon has played a major role in educating, encouraging, and promoting the community’s cultural growth and, just as the museum’s collection has developed over the years, a good number of private collections have grown into important local resources as well. Divided into seven themes, this survey exhibition features impressive artwork from the 20th and 21st centuries. While some artists may be familiar to viewers, due to name recognition or having been featured in past Weatherspoon programs, others will be fresh delights.
The exhibition features 111 artists, 128 works—from 52 private Greensboro art collections.

The Louise D. and Herbert S. Falk, Sr. Gallery:
Until December 12, 2010

Amy Cutler: Falk Visiting Artist
This exhibition includes a selection of gouache paintings and graphite drawings by New York based artist Amy Cutler. Cutler culls her imagery—populated by images of women in the midst of peculiar activities—from a wide range of sources, including her own memory, fairy tales, medieval manuscripts, and Nordic folklore. Her exhibition at the Weatherspoon will focus on the artist’s investigations of physical transformation and disembodiment, as well as her depictions of intricately patterned textiles.

The Leah Louise B. Tannenbaum Gallery
Until Jan 9, 2011

Works from the Robert Rosenblum Family: Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, and Andy Warhol
This exhibition features works by Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns and Roy Lichtenstein that are currently on loan from the Robert Rosenblum Family. Robert Rosenblum (1927-2006) was an esteemed art historian and influential curator whose interests ranged from 18th- and 19th-century French painting to contemporary art. He held an endowed chair as professor of Modern European art at New York University from 1976 until his death, and also served as curator of 20th-century art at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. A lecture on Rosenblum’s scholarly contributions will be held in the conjunction with the exhibition.
