Crossing Limits. Art in Urban Transitions

comunicato stampa

The theme of the 6th VIENNA ART WEEK, initiated by the DOROTHEUM auction house and conceived by Art Cluster Vienna, is Crossing Limits.

The 21st century is characterized by the necessity of continual adaptation of our concepts of living to radically changing conditions. Art typically anticipates this process and thus can provide a role model for life in a state of permanent boundary dissolution.

In this, however, art does not provide cues of how to cope with social problem fields, but selfconfidently defines alternative models of exchange, networking, and aesthetic production.
Crossing Limits shows – also from the perspective of Vienna's geographic position between East and West – how artists facilitate new experiences with and in current crisis scenarios by continual transgression of boundaries, geographical and mental, how they engage in crossdisciplinary activities and open up new scope of action between the public and the private sphere through the conscious abandoning of self-(exercised) control.

This year again, from November 15 to 21, 2010, international museum directors, curators, collectors, and critics will meet with personalities from the Vienna art scene. 23 participant institutions will be affording exciting insights into private and public art collections with special guided tours of special temporary and permanent exhibitions.

The program includes studio visits with artists, designers, and fashion-makers, as well as exhibition openings and interventions at the participant art institutions and galleries, performances, conversations with artists and collectors, lectures, and a high-caliber panel discussion program. These and other highlights will provide for one week of an inspiring and creative atmosphere for networking, exchange, and communication.
