RADICAL. PETER SKUBIC. JEWELRY
Selected works from all creative phases - including many in private ownership and a
number that have never been exhibited publicly before - have been brought together
to present a multifaceted picture of the artist Peter Skubic and his creative ideas
in this exhibition of Die Neue Sammlung - The International Design Museum Munich.
His work is to be seen within the context of the Austrian art scene from the late
1960s onward. Skubic's first unique pieces worked in gold were made at this time,
and he was very soon regarded as an internationally respected innovator in this
field. Through his work as a professor in Cologne and as visiting professor in a
number of different institutions, Skubic has also had a considerable influence on
the young designer scene.
Rebelliousness and radicality, taken to the extreme of physical injury, lie at the
heart of his design principles. The artist / 'engineer' Peter Skubic sees creating
jewelry as an adventure, a sculptural or performative statement straddling the
borders between different genres, as a physical task and creative, liberating act.
His tangible work ranges from erotically formed sculptural rings to tension
brooches, balancing and mirroring objects, as well as works with 'invisible jewelry'
and relicts from performances that have been saved like religious artefacts.
On the same evening an exhibition project by the Prague Academy of Arts,
Architecture and Design (AAAD) entitled 'Treasure Hunt. Class of Eva Eisler' will
also be opened. Works by the K.O.V. studio ('Concept - Object - Meaning') under Eva
Eisler's management will be shown. K.O.V. is the only class at the AAAD in which
training is carried out free from any limitations or guidelines. The
interdisciplinary class straddles the areas of jewelry design, sculpture and object
design.
Die Neue Sammlung's current exhibitions are held against the backdrop of its
permanent jewelry collection (in the Danner Rotunda) in the Pinakothek der Moderne.
As every year, they are held in connection with the special show 'Schmuck' (Jewelry)
at the Internationale Handwerksmesse in Munich, 'Handwerk und Design'
www.ihm.de,
and numerous other jewelry events during this period (16-22.03.2011). An
international forum for the jewelry scene, artists, collectors, gallery owners,
museum professionals and jewelry fans from all around the world is offered here
annually.

TREASURE HUNT. CLASS OF EVA EISLER, PRAGUE
The exhibition 'Treasure Hunt' will present a selection of students' work from 2008-2011, ranging from unconventional jewelry, table-top objects, wooden containers and sculptural structures balancing on the verge of being functional, between art and design, perfection and imperfection, drawing the viewer into the intimate space / architecture of our mind. Students of Studio K.O.V. (Concept Object Meaning) at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague work under the leadership of professor Eva Eisler, an artist, designer, architect and jeweler. Searching as a journey towards a hidden treasure is synonymous with artistic creativity. Both are endless processes in which new questions, and not necessarily answers, are found. The journey is the destination; the treasure itself remains shrouded. The artist and the public both become treasure hunters.
