- What have you there?
- Oh, that's a MacGuffin
- What's a MacGuffin?
- It's a device for trapping the ghosts of Black Prince Road
- But there aren't any ghosts in Black Prince Road
- Well then, that's not a MacGuffin
The MacGuffin is a new work by muf and the second in a series of three temporary public art commissions concerning the future of the Beaufoy Institute in Vauxhall.

The MacGuffin is an intervention consisting of multiple video projections, shadow play and live performance. The MacGuffin will create a captivating moment of transformation; it will value the role of the imaginary and thereby make space for people to speculate on other possibilities for the site and wider locale.

The silhouette of the fire escape buckles beneath an enormous white shroud.a projected image of a shadowy figure passing through the interior of the building appears on this screen.text suggesting ways to occupy, navigate and animate the site dissolve into an image of a falling figure.across the site a live performer is ejected from the building in a variety of dramatic exits.throughout, a solo pianist performs a live musical accompaniment.

The MacGuffin is part of the Beaufoy Arts Project, which will be delivered by a unique partnership of Vauxhall St Peter's Heritage Centre, Lambeth Arts, Gasworks Gallery and Danielle Arnaud contemporary art. The project has been supported by Lambeth Riverside and forms a year-long programme of community involvement in the Riverside area to inform the regeneration process. The final commission will feature new work by Helen Maurer and will take place from the 6 to 15 December 2002 in the Beaufoy Institute.
