Martin Boyce is one of the most original and internationally acclaimed of the Scottish artists who came to prominence during the 1990s. This major Tramway commission will be his first solo exhibition in Scotland since 1999 and his most ambitious project to date.

Our Love is Like the Flowers, the Rain, the Sea and the Hours is a new installation which responds directly to the vast exhibition space of Tramway. Although the artist continues to explore approaches and themes which have been central to his work since 1997, this exhibition introduces a new, more poetic tone to counter the underlying malevolence of recent projects.

Specific elements of design history have frequently been employed in earlier projects by the artist. The work of European and American modernist architects and designers, such as Arne Jacobsen and Charles and Ray Eames, act both as an aesthetic and a cultural reference point. Boyce is concerned with the collapse of the utopian ideals and democratic ethos of mid-century modernist design and the subsequent culture of specialist knowledge and value which surrounds these designs today. This shift in time and collapse of ideology serves to create unstable landscapes where new narratives can be played out.

From 1990 to 1995, Martin Boyce exhibited in a number of key group exhibitions: Speed (Transmission Gallery, Glasgow) Windfall (Seamen's Mission, Glasgow, both 1991) and Institute of Cultural Anxiety (ICA, London, 1994). The artist's first solo exhibition, Something's Got To Give (The Agency, London), took place in 1995. From 1995, Boyce participated in a number of major group exhibitions throughout the UK and internationally: Life/Live (Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, 1996), Material Culture (Hayward Gallery, London, 1997), Beck's Futures (ICA London, 2000), Circles #4 (Galerie ZKM, Karlsruhe, 2001) and My Head is on Fire but my Heart is full of love (Charlottenborg Udstillingsbygning, Copenhagen, 2002). Recent solo exhibitions have been held at Lotto Hammer, London (1999), Jerwood Gallery, London (2000), Els Hanappe Underground, Athens, Johnen & Schottle, Cologne (both 2001) and 'For 1959 Capital Avenue', Museum fur Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt (2002).
