Time/Bank & Time/Store Den Haag

Launch, workshops and symposium
11–30 May 2011

Stroom Den Haag opens the Dutch branch of the e-flux Time/Bank, a platform and community for the cultural sector where goods and services can be exchanged without the use of money. The current distrust of existing financial and economic systems and the radical cuts in art funding are an important driving force behind this parallel micro economy based on trust and solidarity. This initiative by Julieta Aranda and Anton Vidokle is a perfect match with the Stroom program 'Upcycling' which investigates new perspectives in the creation of value and meaning. The launch of Time/Bank is accompanied by a number of special events, including a symposium, workshops and the opening of Time/Store Den Haag.

Wednesday May 11, 2011, 10:30 am–4:30 pm
Workshop by Sue Ball and Sarah Spanton (Leeds Creative Timebank)

This workshop explores the practice, concept, context and perceived benefits of establishing an art-specific timebank.

Thursday May 12, 2011, 10 am–3 pm
Time/Bank Symposium

A symposium about the creation of value, alternative economies and financing in the art world. Speakers are: Julieta Aranda and Anton Vidokle (e-flux Time/Bank); Sue Ball (Leeds Creative Timebank); Mark Fisher (author of 'Capitalist Realism. Is There No Alternative?') and Kilian Wawoe (former banker and author of 'Bonus. Een Nederlandse Bankier vertelt'). For the full schedule consult the Stroom website.

Sunday May 15, 2011, 4 pm
Opening Time/Store Den Haag
The Time/Bank network is not only a digital platform, but also consists of actual shops where earned time can be exchanged for books, magazines, food and other items with so-called 'Hour Notes'. Time/Store Den Haag will be officially opened by Eric Holterhues (Head Art and Culture of Triodos Bank).

Monday May 30, 2011, 10 am–5 pm
Workshop by Paul Glover (Green Planners)
This workshop entitled ´Making Money: How to Start a Local Currency´, will investigate the system behind timebanking. Paul Glover is a community organizer, an advocate of alternative economic systems and the founder of 'Ithaca Hours', a very successful local currency in Ithaca (New York).

The Dutch Time/Bank network

On a national level the Dutch branch of Time/Bank is part of a network of cultural institutions including MU in Eindhoven, Het Nutshuis in The Hague, Witte de With and NAi (Netherlands Architecture Institute) in Rotterdam and Casco in Utrecht. They will accept the Time/Bank Hour Notes when you buy a ticket or when you purchase something in their restaurants or bookstores.
