comunicato stampa

Esther Schipper is pleased to announce the third solo exhibition by Ceal Floyer. The core of Ceal Floyer’s installations can be situated somewhere between minimalism and conceptualism. Employing everyday objects in a very precise way, her work expands with contemplation on the interplay between title, object and apparatus of display. With a sense of humor –and for the absurd– , her work often shows the neglected and peripheral, and resonates with philosophical ideas.

The exhibition shows a selection of seven sculptural pieces. It includes; Ladder, 2010, an over two- metre tall aluminium ladder adapted to the exhibition space, missing all of its rungs except the top and the bottom; Paper Pile, 2010, consisting of numbered sheets of white paper reminiscent of a 1.25m-high plinth that could be used as a support for a sculpture and Line Busy, 2011, a series of small loudspeakers attached on the wall side-by-side in a horizontal line emitting one long continuous tone – the sound part of a ‘line busy’ signal of a telephone. The exhibition is conceptually framed by Welcome, 2011, a welcome mat turned on its head, legible only as visitors leave the gallery.

Ceal Floyer was born in 1968 Karachi in Pakistan. She graduated from Goldsmiths College in 1994 and has exhibited widely throughout the world. Her work has been seen in solo exhibitions at Palais de Tokyo, Paris, MADRE, Naples, and KW Institute for Contemporary Arts, Berlin. In 2007 she was awarded the Nationalgalerie Prize for Young Art. Her work is in major museum collections including Tate Modern, London and MoMA, New York. Ceal Floyer lives and works in Berlin. This is the second exhibition in the new gallery space of Esther Schipper at Schöneberger Ufer 65.
