Provoking A Response: Mierle Laderman Ukeles and Teresa Margolles

sintesi del comunicato stampa

How do artists raise the issues that we would rather look away from? Provocation can play an important role in many art works, but some artists make it an integral part of their work. In public spaces being provocative to make a point is more complex. Teresa Margolles' work is visually - even physically - confronting and uncompromising. It focuses on societal but also very private taboos such as slavery and death, and incorporates performance as one of its media. Mierle Laderman Ukeles' work has a background in 1970's feminist performance art, when she focused on the themes of sanitation and maintenance from a private and a feminine perspective. Later, Ukeles became involved with the New York Sanitation Department. She has worked with them on actions and performances, and has become life-long resident artist, shifting her focus to labour issues. In these artistic strategies, what is the distinction between provocation, shock and critique? What rules apply if you want to shock the audience, particularly in the public sphere? Are there limits, also in terms of being effective or when producing a good art work?
