Anri Sala

VW (Veneklasen/Werner), Berlin

3, 2, 1. Final Movement of the series Symphony, a performance cicle with works by Arto Lindsay, Olaf Nicolai, Annika Eriksson, Bo Christian Larsson, Ari Benjamin Meyers and Anri Sala. Exploring new strategies and situations in performance, each movement plays with - or against - an idea of conversion, disregarding the notion that artworks exist as purely visual strategies.

comunicato stampa

VeneKlasen/Werner is pleased to announce 3, 2, 1. by Anri Sala. This is the final movement of SYMPHONY, a performance series organized in collaboration with SOUNDFAIR.

Musicians, composers, and visual artists were invited to make works that expand on the traditional concepts of concert and exhibition, and to present these works as unique events or movements in the gallery. Exploring new strategies and situations in performance, each movement of SYMPHONY plays with - or against - an idea of conversion: each musician is confronted with a new staging, which does not resemble a typical concert; likewise, each artist risks a step into the musical world, disregarding the notion that artworks exist as purely visual strategies.

The sixth and closing movement of SYMPHONY is 3, 2, 1. by Anri Sala. 3, 2, 1. is an answer, an echo and a dialogue with Sala's 2005 work Long Sorrow, which derives its title from the so-called "Langer Jammer", the longest building in Berlin. Sala filmed musician Jemeel Moondoc performing a free-form improvisation in an upper floor of the "Langer Jammer", overlooking an urban void. Sala later recorded Moondoc responding to his original improvisation, thereby creating a duet with the solo performance captured in Long Sorrow. For the performance 3, 2, 1. Sala invited acclaimed saxophonist Andre Vida to answer and echo this duet live in the gallery, expanding the soundscape into a trio.

The gallery will open at 19.00 on Friday 24 June. 3, 2, 1. will be performed at 20.00.

Albanian artist Anri Sala (b. 1974) lives and works in Berlin. He was nominated for the prestigious Hugo Boss Prize (2002) and was awarded the Golden Lion for the Young Artist Prize at the Venice Biennale (2001). His works have featured prominently in exhibitions worldwide, including the Venice Biennale (1999, 2001 and 2003), the Istanbul Biennial (2003), the Berlin Biennale (2001 and 2006) and Manifesta (2000). Recent solo exhibitions include Galerie Chantal Crousel, Paris; Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal; and Kurimanzutto, Mexico City.

SYMPHONY is a collaboration of VW (VeneKlasen/Werner) and SOUNDFAIR, a Berlin-based exhibition collective whose aim is to re-contextualize music through its presentation as unique artworks.
