Donald Judd (1928–1994) is recognized internationally as one of the most important artists of the 20th century. Having become known in the 1960s as one of the protagonists of Minimal Art, he expanded the range of his creative work to include architecture and design. It is, however, largely unknown that Judd was also intensely involved with furniture design. This exhibition presents a concentrated selection of furniture designed by Judd, including prototypes and pieces that were created by the artist for his own use, and that have rarely been seen outside of New York and Marfa/Texas, where Judd lived.
The unique concept of the Pinakothek der Moderne and the points of focus of the cooperating museums on its premises make it possible for visitors to experience Donald Judd’s works in different contexts. Thus, the permanent design exhibition of the Neue Sammlung enables visitors to view Judd’s furniture within the context of designers he particularly valued. These include not only the American artists Ray and Charles Eames, but also the German designer Dieter Rams.
