ATHICA Mystery Triennial

Athica - Athens Institute for Contemporary Art, Athens

This fun and unique exhibition celebrates Athens' artistic quality and diversity by giving visitors the rare opportunity to view works by over 120 local artists, all in one space at one time. All the works are the same size, highlighting the wide range of mediums, both 2-D and 3-D, of these small works by signature Athens' artists.

comunicato stampa

ATHICA is excited to be hosting the inaugural ATHICA Mystery Triennial, which opens Saturday, August 20th and runs through Sunday, September 18th, 2011.
This fun and unique exhibition celebrates Athens’ artistic quality and diversity by giving visitors the rare opportunity to view works by over 120 local artists, all in one space at one time. All the works are the same size, 5.5” x 8.5”, highlighting the wide range of mediums, both 2-D and 3-D, of these small works by signature Athens’ artists.
The twist is that they will be hung anonymously, with the mystery artists’ identities revealed only to those who purchase pieces by donating to ATHICA. Donations of $60 for one work and $100 for two will help fund ATHICA’s future exhibitions and events. Those who want to get “first dibs” on the works in the exhibit may gain entry during the first hour of the opening reception for a donation of $10.00.

Just think—if you can I.D. Athens’ artists correctly, you may just garner a work by the likes of R.E.M. or Art Rosenbaum, which would sell for over $1000 in a commercial setting.
Five and Ten, Ted’s Pizza and other fine restaurants are donating food for the opening reception and many local businesses such as The Loft art supply store are sponsors.
The exhibition will function as a fundraiser for the non-profit art space’s future exhibitions, with Athens’ artists stepping up to the plate to contribute to this local venue dedicated to innovative and challenging contemporary art. Lucky Athens’ audiences get to do their part by obtaining some wonderful original artworks.
The exhibition will also be a reminder of the forty exhibits ATHICA has mounted since 2002; many bringing fascinating national and international artists to town, contributing to the cultural vitality of the region. The exhibits have also given many non-artist members of the community a public forum to present on a variety of issues as varied as the timely topics the exhibits have addressed. While many are aware of the, the ATHICA Mystery Triennial will help new audiences discover ATHICA, as well as garner support for our programs.

Local art enthusiasts can show-off their knowledge of Athens’ artists by taking the ‘Who Dunnit’ quiz. The contestants with the highest scores will be announced during the closing day activities, with gift certificates from local businesses awarded to those most ‘in the know.’ All works remaining will also be half-off that final day.
Several events will be held during the run, such as the Sunday August 28th Mystery Triennial Benefit Concert with Kate Morrissey and Marty Winkler performing at 7:30 p.m. on September 15th. That is also the deadline for nominations for the People’s Choice Awards, with audience members nominating their favorite mystery artist to be chosen for our October ATHICA exhibition: Selections from the ATHICA Mystery Triennial.

The mystery works’ identities will all be revealed to the general public at the conclusion of the exhibit: a sneak peek of some of the works—unidentified of course—is available now on our website. (The list of artists confirmed as of press time is at the end of this PR document, and will be continually updated to the website.)
From traditional landscapes to conceptual artworks, created by everyone from UGA Art Professors, longtime boho townies, folk artists, high-craft artisans and to up-and-coming recent MFA students, this exhibition is sure to have something to suit every taste.
Prominent painters include June Ball, Scott Belville, Jill Carnes, Andrew Cayce, Toby Cole, Carol Johns, Joe Havasy, Jonathan Jacquet, Judith McWillie, Mary Porter, Lea Purvis, Greg Benson, Bob and Claire Clements and Christopher Hocking, Jeremy Hughes and Anthony Wislar.

Brilliant collagists and mixed-media artists such as Dana Jo Cooley, Cindy Jerrell, Jillian Guarco, Alexei Gural and Rosemary Mendocino are all contributing works, as is longtime folk artist Peter Loose.
This being Athens, many of the artists are closely associated with the music biz, with a lovely and mysterious work contributed by R.E.M., as well as works by Nina Barnes, Vanessa Briscoe Hay, Laura Carter, and Ben Reynolds.
Photographers of the caliber of Carl Martin, Mark Steinmetz, Jason Thrasher, Michael Lachowski, Michael Marshall, Rinne Allen, Margo Rosenbaum and Robyn Waserman are all on board as are conceptual artists such as Didi Dunphy, Hope Hilton, Brian Hitselberger, Cal Clements, Michael Oliveri, Kathryn Refi and Paul Thomas.

Expert fabric artists such as Elizabeth Barton and Rene Shoemaker have crafted works just for the exhibit, as have well-known sculptors and small metals artists such as Jim Buonaccorsi, Ken Kase, Jim Norton, Andy Nasisse, Noah Saunders and Krysia Haag.
Fabulous draftsmen and printmakers such as Amanda Burk, Nancy Carter, David Hale, Hannah Jones, Rich Panico, Melissa Harshman, Jon Swindler, Kim Deakins have works in the show, as well as locally-grown cartoonists Missy Kulik, Patrick Dean and Drew Weing.

The ATHICA Board—composed of artists, arts writers and art supporters—dreamed up the ATHICA Mystery Triennial. They set about inviting the best long-time Athens’ artists as a way to both celebrate Athens’ artistic riches and help ATHICA continue to enhance the town’s quality of life. The half-page size of the works was chosen to honor the size of ATHICA’s announcement cards As many of our longtime fans know, since opening in 2002 ATHICA has mounted 40 innovative and challenging exhibits featuring international, national and regional artists, improving our quality of life.

ATHICA’s many thematic exhibits have increased our town’s cultural tourism, with over 5,500 visitors attending our exhibitions and affiliated events since 2009. Major installations and projects have instigated discourse on issues from the political to the personal, the environmental to the philosophical, addressing serious topics such as energy, homelessness, food and war as well as personal issues such as romance and breastfeeding. Many of the emerging artists who have exhibited here have gone on to be purchased for the collections of major museums or have solo shows at established venues in major cities. And in the meantime we have enjoyed their innovative creative visions. These exhibitions are well documented on our website archives with images and videos shot by dedicated volunteers and uploaded by armies of UGA interns and volunteers, contributing to Athens’ web presence.
The recipient of prestigious national grants from the Andy Warhol Foundation and the Elizabeth Firestone Graham Foundation, we have helped put Athens on the map as an arts destination. Numerous stories in art blogs such as Burnaway and Art Relish, articles in local papers as well as in magazines like Art Papers, and interviews on WUGA have all contributed to Athens’ artistic reputation.

We hope that our friends in the press will help us make the most of this wonderful opportunity to celebrate Athens and help ATHICA thrive.
