re.act.feminism #2 - a performing archive

The performance project "re.act.feminism #2 — a performing archive" will be touring through six European countries from 7 October 2011 to 1 September 2013. The first exhibition will open on 7 October 2011 at Centro Cultural Montehermoso in Vitoria-Gasteiz, the capital of the Basque region in Spain.

With this project, the organiser cross links e.V. and the curators Bettina Knaup and Beatrice Ellen Stammer, draw on the success of the exhibition "re.act.feminism — performance art of the 1960s & 70s today" which was shown to great critical acclaim in the Akademie der Künste, Berlin, Germany, in 2008-2009.

The heart of the project is a continually expanding, mobile and temporary performance archive. In its current version, it presents gender-critical, feminist and queer performance art by roughly 120 artists from the 1960s, 70s and the beginning of the 1980s, as well as contemporary positions.

The research focus is on artworks from Eastern and Western Europe, the Mediterranean and the Middle East, the US and selected countries in Latin America.
On its route through Europe, the performance archive will be presented and “animated” in different ways through accompanying exhibitions, live performances, lectures, readings and screenings. Through academic cooperation and ongoing research by partner institutions, the archive will continue to expand.

The main goals of the project are to make performance documentation, which is spread all over the globe and often difficult to access, available to a broader public for the first time in such a great volume and variety, and to strengthen cross-generational and trans-cultural dialogue. The archive contains performance documentation and video performances, photographs, artist interviews, texts and scores.

At the first venue, Centro Cultural Montehermoso, the archive will be accompanied by an exhibition that presents 18 positions which have been selected from the archive.

Conclusion of the project in 2013
The completion of the project is set for the summer of 2013 in Berlin, where the results of the preceding trajectory and the research by partner institutions will be presented. Furthermore, a bilingual exhibition catalogue, documenting the entire project, will be published. The project’s content will also be made accessible in the form of short descriptions, images, texts, commentary and tags on a website, which is intended as a research tool and will grow in sync with the ongoing exhibition and archive programme.
