comunicato stampa

The £10 million centre, designed by award-winning architects Austin-Smith:Lord, will be Liverpool’s first purpose-built cultural project for over sixty years, and no other UK-based arts centre will offer the same quality and range in it’s programme, resources and activities. FACT will provide a vibrant focal point in the £110 million redevelopment of the Ropewalks district of Liverpool and is a flagship project in the city’s Capital of Culture bid.

Issac Julien, Baltimore
Two stunning galleries will provide a space for temporary exhibitions of film, video and new media. The opening show is Isaac Julien’s specially commissioned film Baltimore. There are three state-of-the-art cinemas, which will screen arthouse and independent film, run by leading operator City Screen, and will open with a programme including Alex Cox’s Revengers Tragedy, a film shot on location in Liverpool.

Working alongside the architects, FACT have commissioned a number of artworks that either form part of the building, for example the zinc-panelled exterior and its interactive lighting system, or are a response to it, such as the Singh Twins’ beautiful lightbox portraits. There will be a programme of digital arts projects in the Media Lounge, a curated space for internet and media art, featuring artists including Last.FM, Mongrel and Graham Harwood. There will also be weekly live webcasts from the FACT Channel.

As well as providing a home to FACT, the UK’s leading agency for the commissioning and presentation of film, video and new media art, the Centre will house MITES (the Moving Image Touring & Exhibition Service – a resource used by museums and galleries across the UK), the medialab, a digital mastering service and a transmission suite which will provide artists with the most up to date technology available.
