comunicato stampa

Organized in conjunction with The Museum of Modern Art’s exhibition Print/Out (February 19–May 14, 2012), the Museum will host Print Studio, an interactive space that explores the evolution of artistic practices relating to the medium of print, from January 23 to March 9, 2012, in the Mezzanine Level of The Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Education and Research Building. The Studio offers a series of drop-in workshops, lectures, and events that emphasize accessible and sustainable models for the production and dissemination of ideas. Drawing from resources such as the Reanimation Library—a collection of discarded books acquired for their visual content—and a variety of print techniques, participants at the Studio are invited to experiment with and manipulate images and text. Led by artists and educators, activities highlight the ways in which new digital technologies incorporate traditional printing practices, re-imagining the role of print in contemporary visual culture.

The Studio will be accompanied by an original website at www.MoMA.org/PrintStudio . Each week from January 23 to March 9, the site will feature new updates including upcoming programs, guest blog posts, visitor viewpoints, and images. The site will include a calendar and schedule of workshops and events, a Flickr group for the collection of Print Studio “editions,” and videos of the 10-minute talks that will be held at Print Studio. The website will launch on January 20, 2012.

Print Studio programs are free unless otherwise noted, with participation on a first-come, first-served basis limited to 25 people. The Studio will be open to all ages, and children must be accompanied by an adult.

Print Studio is made possible by a partnership with Volkswagen of America.

An Evening with Dan Graham

Dan Graham has pioneered Conceptual, performance, and video art since the mid-1960s, producing a profoundly influential body of work and theory that has helped to shape the direction and practice of contemporary art over the past four decades. Beginning in 1965, Graham took a series of color snap-shots in suburban New Jersey and New York, using a Kodak Instamatic fixed focus camera. Referring to Minimalist reduction and seriality, Graham utilized the 35mm slide format as a repeatable "art structure" in and of itself. The resulting slide projection, Homes for America, premiered in the exhibition Projected Art at New York City's Finch College Museum of Art in 1966. Graham will present and discuss this work, which was acquired and recently restored by MoMA. In addition, Graham will speak about his early "proto-Conceptual" art dealing with magazine pages. With the recent acquisition of The Daled Collection of American and European Conceptual Art, MoMA added a substantial number of Graham's text pieces and works intended as interventions in magazines. Modern Mondays allows contemporary filmmakers and moving image artists to present their work directly to audiences.
