ELEMENTARY MEASUREMENTS
new drawings and digital skies
Gallery N. von Bartha has moved to new premises and is proud to announce the
opening of the new gallery space with an exhibition of drawings and digital
skies by New York-based artist, Jill Baroff. The opening will take place on
Tuesday March 18th from 6 to 9 pm. The exhibition will be on view until
April 26th.
The mapping of natural phenomena is usually associated with scientific
method. In this exhibition, the drawings and prints of Jill Baroff open this
preconception to new interpretations. Based on predictive tide tables, the
Tide Drawings render the ebb and flow of bodies of water; making visible the
unseen passage of time and mutual influence of the spheres. Her digital
prints capture the often overlooked, nuanced gradations of any blue sky.
In the open ocean, the actual rise of the tidally induced wave crest is only
one to a few feet. It is only when the tidal crests and troughs move into
shallow water, against land masses, and into confining channels, that
noticeable variations in the height of sea level can be detected. In turn,
it is only when the sky is parsed and rearranged that we are able to clearly
perceive the colour variations present. Moments of quietude and reflection
open sight to the subtle, often transient nature of our experience. These
works render illusive perception concrete.
Jill Baroff has shown extensively in both Europe and the United States. She
recently participated in the London exhibition, Minimal Art Ancient China in
2002 and this is her first solo exhibition with the gallery. She has made
installations at the Marktkirche in Hannover, Germany, the Basel Art Fair,
along with many venues in the United States, and she has been the recipient
of numerous fellowships and awards including The National Endowment for the
Arts, The Pollock-Krasner Foundation and is a MacDowell Fellow. Drawings by
Jill Baroff are currently on view at the University of Massachusetts in
Amherst, and are part of an exhibition entitled ³Drawings of Choice from a
New York Collection², at the Georgia Museum of Art, which will travel to the
Cincinnati Museum of Art and Bowdoin College Museum of Art later this year.
