Arles, Record of the Rhone

Musee du Louvre, Paris

Twenty years of underwater excavations. The exhibition brings the rich past of Roman Arles (Arelate) to life: from the imposing architecture of the city to its vibrant trade activity, not to mention the daily lives and practices of the people who lived there. On display: architectural fragments, magnificent examples of Roman statuary and silverwork, votive offerings, amphorae, lamps, bronze helmets, and jewelry.

comunicato stampa

curated by Claude Sintes, Jean-Luc Martinez

In partnership with the Musée départemental Arles antique, the Musée du Louvre presents a major exhibition of the most significant artifacts from the painstaking and complex excavation work in the Rhône, an untamed river steeped in history.

The exhibition brings the rich past of Roman Arles (Arelate) to life: from the imposing architecture of the city to its vibrant trade activity, not to mention the daily lives and practices of the people who lived there.

A number of rare artifacts, particularly bronzes, are on display: architectural fragments, magnificent examples of Roman statuary and silverwork, votive offerings, amphorae, lamps, bronze helmets, and jewelry.

Works from the Musée d’Arles will be joined by works from the Louvre, the Musée Calvet d’Avignon and the Museo di Antichità in Turin, which will loan the only bust identified as Julius Caesar prior to the 2007 discovery in Arles. The comparison of these two portraits promises to be a major scientific and media event.

Films on the discovery and on bronze casting techniques by the C2RMF laboratory (Center for Research and Restoration of the Museums of France) help shed light on the twenty-year-long effort to bring the past of Roman Arles to the surface.
