The rape of creativity

Authenticity and the creative act are central themes of this exhibition of new work by Jake and Dinos Chapman.

Bad boys of British art, the Chapman brothers are known as much for their aesthetic of shock and provocation as for their skill as draughtsmen and object makers. From sculptures and drawings inspired by Goya, to their sexually reconfigured mannequins sporting Nike trainers and the epic sculptural work Hell, the artists create works of weird beauty, horror and excess. The Rape of Creativity is a new body of work presented in the UK for the first time. The exhibition includes sculptures, paintings, drawings, prints and a major installation created for the Upper Gallery. The exhibition has been highlighted by The Daily Telegraph as one of the shows to see in 2003.

Jake and Dinos Chapman have worked together since they graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1990. Their work has been included in numerous exhibitions worldwide. In the UK they are best known for their contribution to the exhibitions Sensation (1997) and Apocalypse: Beauty and Horror in Contemporary Art (2000), both presented by The Royal Academy. Works from the Chapman Family Collection at the White Cube, London, is widely regarded as among the most impressive displays of 2002. The Rape of Creativity is organised by Modern Art Oxford.

Modern Art Oxford is the only UK venue for the exhibition.

A special publication documenting the exhibition will be available in May. A limited edition print by Jake and Dinos Chapman created exclusively for Modern Art Oxford will be available from 12 April.

Jake and Dinos Chapman have also collaborated with Beck's to create two limited edition artists' bottles, the latest in a distinguished series that began in 1987. Beck's has been sponsoring British contemporary art since 1985, commissioning and supporting work from artists.
