NADINE ROBINSON: WHITE WE
AMY MORKEN: NEW WORK
Exhibition: April 18 to May 31, 2003

NADINE ROBINSON: Caren Golden Fine Art is pleased to present "White We", the first New York Solo exhibition of Nadine Robinson. Known for her large-scale sculpture and sound installations, Robinson situates herself at the crossroads of the white modernist canon and the African American hip-hop aesthetic. In her wall-mounted "White We" work, composed of braided white hair extensions and presented with a Diana Ross soundtrack, Robinson juxtaposes her experience as an African American woman against the minimalist traditions. Working within this sleek and minimal vocabulary, Robinson combines hip-hop sounds, DJ equipment and unconventional materials in a way that challenges our definitions of painting, beauty and social class in post-industrial society. Also on view is "Infrastructure", a variation on the "Tower Hollers" installation which brought Robinson prominence in the Queens MoMA exhibition "Tempo" last year.

In addition to the "Tempo" exhibition, Nadine Robinson's work has recently been on view in such prestigious museum exhibitions as "Freestyle" at the Studio Museum in Harlem, "One Planet Under a Groove: Hip Hop and Contemporary Art" at the Bronx Museum of the Arts, "Greater New York" at P.S.1 and "Submerge" at the Kunstbunker in Nuremberg, Germany, among others. In the coming months, her work will be on view at the Philadelphia ICA and the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art.

AMY MORKEN: In this, her third solo exhibition with Caren Golden Fine Art, Amy Morken presents six new drawings that expand upon her spontaneous mixed-media narratives. With lithe sarcasm, her familiar bestial and androgynous protagonists emerge from a thrift shop landscape clad in leopard skin bikinis and equipped with cute and not-so-cute "must-haves" from the world of fashion and fitness. In these uncanny compositions, Morken exposes the hypocrisy of a society where women are expected to paper over their human identities with the accoutrements and diversions of fitness and beauty culture. Deconstructed figures, drawn in layers with lush, waxy colors, are composed of disjointed limbs and kitty mouths. Isolated within the group, these women are connected through broken, scrawled comments that float between them like failed missives; "I'm getting a fake tooth" and "I'm going to yoga" are followed by a chorus of "me too".
