comunicato stampa

We are very happy to announce the gallery's third international video programme, which features eleven artists: Bettina Allamoda, Heather Burnett, Martin Dammann, Volker Eichelmann/Roland Rust, (e.) Twin Gabriel, Frans Jacobi, Nina Könnemann, Oliver Ressler, Zineb Sedira and Ralf Ziervogel.

The programme mainly shows narrative and documentary videos, assemblage of footage that deals in various ways with the iconography of war and cultural struggles of dominance. It shows on the one side the representation of violence in the media, and on the other side the public and personal reactions and disobediences.

'From 'Fortress Europe' to 'War against Terrorism' and the 'Middle East Crisis' our everyday political culture is entrenched with military terminology. It has however become increasingly difficult to clearly delineate the attacker and the defender and the distinction between attack and defence has been blurred. '(Camouflage)

Cultural definitions and dominance influence our daily and every-day-life attitude in reaction to politics that we express by our actions and reactions, by our choices of belief systems, and by our choices of how and what we consume.

All films are shown in a single screen projection programme, which repeats itself approximately every hour. Every day at 6.30 p.m. we will play the entire rock opera 'Betonherz/Concrete heart' by Frans Jacobi. 'Dissobedienti' by Oliver Ressler will be screened permanently on a monitor in the front room of the gallery.

The screening room was designed by (e.) Twin Gabriel. A black, heavy curtain made out of industrial plastic functions as both entrance into the video space and its black-out shield and alludes to the protective methods against chemical attacks (Don't forget to buy your room-sealing items!).

Opening: Wednesday, 30 April 2003 6 - 9 p.m.

I would like to thank the following people for their very nice help in setting up the programme:
Bea de Souza, The Agency Gallery, London
Karin Günther, Karin Günther Gallery, Hamburg
Hans D. Christ und Iris Dressler, hArtware projekte, Dortmund
