Piercing Brightness. Dawood works across media in film, painting and light sculpture. His Indian and Pakistani roots have inspired a broad mapping within his practice, remixing Eastern and Western artistic traditions, and recalling influences as diverse as cosmology, science fiction and Sufism.
Piercing Brightness is an exhibition by internationally acclaimed artist Shezad Dawood, presented over two venues in Penzance before touring internationally.
A solo exhibition by internationally acclaimed artist Shezad Dawood will show concurrently at both Newlyn Art Gallery and The Exchange to coincide with the 5th anniversary of the redevelopment of Newlyn Art Gallery and the opening of The Exchange. Piercing Brightness is the first exhibition the gallery has presented at both its venues.
British artist Shezad Dawood (b1974) works across media in film, painting and light sculpture. His Indian and Pakistani roots have inspired a broad mapping within his practice, remixing Eastern and Western artistic traditions, and recalling influences as diverse as cosmology, science fiction and Sufism.
Newlyn Art Gallery continues its focus on contemporary painting with the inclusion of Dawood’s textile paintings, and The Exchange presents video work and a light sculpture. Dawood’s fusion of cultures and variety of media have inspired a series of events, including Tangiers Book Club and Musical Dreamings, three concerts performed in front of Dawood’s New Dream Machine Project sculpture.
24TH JUNE - 29TH SEPTEMBER 2012
Newlyn Art Gallery presents a series of the artist’s textile-based paintings, incorporating circles, ellipses and pyramids, referencing the sacred and sculptural. These works often act as research tools and storyboards for Dawood’s film works. Also presented is a Super 16mm film, New Dream Machine Project, which features the kinetic light sculpture (showing at The Exchange) as part of a concert by the Master Musicians of Jajouka, filmed in Tangiers in 2011.
30TH JUNE - 15TH SEPTEMBER 2012
The Exchange presents a large-scale kinetic light sculpture, New Dream Machine Project, a work that references the original Dream Machine, created by Brion Gysin (who was at the centre of the Tangiers counter culture in the 1960s), and conceived to have an effect on the viewer similar to deep sleep or meditation. Alongside one of the artist’s neon sculptures will be Trailer, a 15-minute ‘gallery’ edit of Dawood’s feature-length film Piercing Brightness, that subverts sci-fi genres and addresses issues of race and migration.
Piercing Brightness is a collaboration between Modern Art Oxford, Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange, Harris Museum & Art Gallery, Preston, and KINOKINO Centre for Art & Film, Norway.
Supported by London 2012 Festival.
