Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam

The opening of the museum's new extension and the interconnected renovated space coincides with Rotterdam's Architecture Biennale. 'The making of things', 'Rotterdam Design Award' and a personal exhibition by Olafur Eliasson.

comunicato stampa

By May 2003, once renovations have been completed, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen will once again be fully operational but..... more accessible, more spacious than ever and with more (permanent) room for its extremely wide-ranging collections. The exhibition programme reflects the diversity of the collections of which the following agenda is merely a selection.

REOPENING
10 May 2003
The opening of the museum's new extension and the interconnected renovated space coincides with Rotterdam's Architecture Biennale. The building can be viewed as from 10 May 2003, from which date the permanent collection will again be on show in an improved and more extensive form than ever before: besides old masters like Heronymus Bosch and Rembrandt, modern classics like Degas and Kandinsky will have their own permanent place which will also pay special attention to the collection of surrealists with works by Dalí and Magritte, for instance. Major contemporary art will also be on permanent display, top class works contained in the collection of drawings will be shown in the new Print Room and there will be a new exhibit of the industrial art collection in a new arrangement.

The making of things
10 May 2003 - 27 July 2003
Most design exhibitions are limited to displays of final products. Equally fascinating, however, is the process of how 'things' are created, from idea to end result, an impression of which is provided through some 25 examples. In connection with the Architecture Biennale, special attention will be given to several architects who are or who have been actively involved in design and styling, among whom Frank Lloyd Wright and Rem Koolhaas.

Rotterdam Design Award
10 May 2003 -27 July 2003
The Rotterdam Design Award is a biennial event around the crowning of the best designed Dutch product. The award ceremony is accompanied by a large exhibition of nominated products and by publications and debates concerning the question of what makes a good design and why.

Olafur Eliasson
10 May 2003 - 31 August 2003
Eliasson is an artist who is interested in evoking phenomena we know from nature by means of simple technical devices. He creates sensory experiences in which the technical devices are an inextricable visible component of the installation. His work makes viewers aware of their perception. At the same time, Eliasson's installations refer to ancient themes in art history such as the sublime, beauty and the visionary.

The Achilles series by Peter Paul Rubens
30 August 2003 - 16 November 2003
The exhibited 'Achilles series' consists of eight wall carpets. The exhibition offers insight into the creation of these famous carpets. A series of preparatory studies serves as the basis for eight 'modelli', produced by Rubens. These preliminary studies have recently been restored, so that the original, extremely bright colours are visible again.

Fischli/Weiss
7 December 2003 - 7 February 2004
Swiss artist duo Peter Fischli and David Weiss currently exhibit, without the pretension of being complete, groups of works created over the past 20 years which they call "falsche Retrospektive" in Museum Boijmans van Beuningen.
Fischli/Weiss play with everyday reality. They constantly and subtly confront us with questions like 'what is real, what is true, what is important?'. A lot of what is seemingly junk, different media, video, photography, craftwork and much more...
Fischli/Weiss create a universe which holds many surprises.
