Several exhibition spaces, Kassel

An exhibition is an unfolding organism, like a vegetable bud. It comes from intuitions, then it forms an instinct, then an opinion, then a knowledge; like a plant—which contains in itself many other living entities—it has roots, buds and fruit.

After four years of preliminary encounters, seminars and preparations, after a 100-day exhibition and other activities in Kassel, a series of seminars and a 30-day exhibition in Kabul, an 8-day seminar in Alexandria, and a 14-day retreat in Banff, dOCUMENTA (13) will close in Kassel on Sunday, September 16, 2012, at 8 pm.

Almost 100 days ago, when the exhibition opened in Kassel, we said that dOCUMENTA (13) was dedicated to artistic research and forms of imagination that explore commitment, matter, things, embodiment, and active living in connection with, yet not subordinated to, theory. We said these were terrains where politics are inseparable from a sensual, energetic, and worldly alliance between current research in various scientific and artistic fields and other knowledges, both ancient and contemporary, and that dOCUMENTA (13) was driven by a holistic and non-logocentric vision that is skeptical of the persisting belief in economic growth, a vision that is shared with, and recognizes, the shapes and practices of knowing of all the animate and inanimate makers of the world, including people.

And now we add that an exhibition could be thought of as a pre-reflexive consciousness, a qualitative duration of consciousness without itself. A bliss able to go beyond the aporias of the subject and the object—an experience of life no longer dependent on the first, nor submitted to the latter. Art is ceaselessly posed in life. And this indefinite life posed in art allows us to grasp the lived and living, to understand life as carried by the events, and by the singularities actualized in subject/objects. Art does not just come after life, but rather it offers the immensity of a temporality constituting spaces where one sees the event yet to come in the absolute of an immediate consciousness.

During closing week, dOCUMENTA (13) hosts three conferences that focus on three topics that have contributed to shape the entire project: artistic research; seeds and multispecies intra-action; and time. What is artistic research, how can it act in a less anthropocentric mode that is committed to the emancipation of all the makers of the world, to their livelihood, and how can that occur in a world free from the control over time that is ever more problematic in our advanced digital age?

The two-day conference “On Artistic Research” is developed in collaboration with the Art Academy Network established by dOCUMENTA (13). The program opens on the morning of September 8 with “Artistic Research or How to Disorganize the Relations between the Disciplines That Deal With Art,” introduced by Chus Martínez, and featuring lectures by Mai Abu ElDahab, Luca Cerizza, Simon Sheikh, and Jan Verwoert. The afternoon session, “Doing Research: An Exercise in Thinking About the Meaning of Artistic Research in the Academy Context,” introduced by Jan Kaila and Henk Slager, involves a series of research statements presented by Ayreen Anastas and Rene Gabri, Bryndís Snæbjörnsdótir, Chiara Fumai, Dora García, Claire Pentecost, Clodagh Emoe, Elske Rosenfeld/Giulia Cilla/Ingrid Cogne, Hongjohn Lin, Jeremiah Day, Laura Malacart, Sam Belinfante, and Terike Haapoja. A book presentation by Angela Vettese is followed with a recap by Mick Wilson, joined by Gertrud Sandqvist, Simon Sheikh, Chus Martínez and Jan Verwoert for a concluding panel discussion.

The morning session of September 9, introduced by Nicola Setari, begins with a talk by Yann Chateigné about the publication and research program at GENEVA University of Art and Design related to and stemming from Pedro Reyes' project for dOCUMENTA (13), Sanatorium. It is followed by a discussion between Ayreen Anastas, Andris Brinkmanis, and Rene Gabri. Participants in the afternoon session include: Andrea Büttner, Ane Hjort Guttuand, Vanessa Ohlraun, Bernhard Rüdiger, and Susanne M. Winterling. The day ends with concluding remarks by Chus Martínez and Nicola Setari.

“On Seeds and Multispecies Intra-Action: Disowning Life” is a two-day public conference that takes as its starting point dOCUMENTA (13)’s perspective to build a global alliance between different forms of worldly research and knowledges. The discussion focuses on questions around food and seeds, water and land, energy and de-growth, as well as around humans as only one form of animal and biological life amongst many others. Notions revolving around seeding and the idea of multispecies intra-action are introducing new perspectives in eco-feminism that place the problem of difference or “othering” beyond gender. Inspired by and hoping to elaborate on the interrelated horizons of two main thinkers in these fields—seeds activist Vandana Shiva and multispecies biologist and cultural theorist Donna Haraway—this final conference of dOCUMENTA (13) gathers together some of the most rigorous scholars, artists, and activists in these fields with a range of committed new voices.

Part one opens on Monday, September 10, with a sound intervention by Florian Hecker, followed by lectures by Vinciane Despret and Beatriz Preciado, and a performative contribution by Lissette Olivares and Cheto Castellano. A recorded lecture by Donna Haraway introduces the afternoon session, followed by a presentation by Salima Ikram, a talk with Tue Greenfort, and contributions by Tron Frede Thingstad, Claire Pentecost, Karel Jezek, and Toril Johannessen. The day is introduced, moderated and summarized by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev and Chus Martínez.

The second part of the conference on Saturday, September 15, commences with a lecture by George McKay and an artists’ talk with Maria Thereza Alves and Jimmie Durham. A special lunch is provided by artist Christian Philipp Müller at the Karlsaue park. Vandana Shiva opens the afternoon session with a keynote lecture, followed by a talk by Asif Zaidi, a conversation with Mark Dion, and a presentation by Josefina Hepp, who is joined in discussion by Amar Kanwar, Nalini Malani, and Claire Pentecost. The day is introduced, moderated and summarized by Ayreen Anastas, Rene Gabri, and Jürgen Heß.

3. “On Time and Clocks”

“On Time and Clocks” constitutes the second part of a discussion on time that began with a conversation between William Kentridge and Peter Galison during the opening week in June. It focuses on Anri Sala’s new project for dOCUMENTA (13), Clocked Perspective, that connects the Orangerie and the Karlsaue park. Sala is joined by quantum physicist Anton Zeilinger, curator and writer Hans Ulrich Obrist, and clockmaker Hans Siebeneicher, who devised the mechanical clockwork, to discuss different notions of time and how clocks influence our lives. Introduced by Nicola Setari, concluding remarks by Artistic Director Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev.

THE FILM MARATHON: THE THREE LITTLE PIGS

Albert Serra: The Three Little Pigs

During dOCUMENTA (13), artist and filmmaker Albert Serra made a 100-hour "movie" by casting, scripting, filming on HD video and editing one hour of film every day. This performative, surrealist, and promethean act of resistance, was an intellectual act of freedom from all logics of productive behavior in today’s society. During the exhibition, the product of each previous day’s labors, was screened at the Bali Cinema. In closing week, in contrast, the entire film will be screened one time only, over the course of a single week, 24 hours a day. The Three Little Pigs presents an encounter between three strange monologues, by three men: Johan Wolfgang Goethe, Adolf Hitler, and Rainer Werner Fassbinder. In this film, actors and non-professional actors rehearse three texts, the conversations of these three characters changing constantly in the making and, at the same time, constructing a continuous image between very different minds, thinking logics, ways of perceiving, and forms of action. Absurdly long, the movie is a new alliance between seeing and the equivocal. Serra’s non-stop film screening is a conflation of uncompromising passion for the image, the voice, the “then” of history and the “now,” the actors, the time in Kassel, and the making of the movie itself, which presides over and witnesses the last days of dOCUMENTA (13).
