comunicato stampa

Starting a week from today, Amsterdam’s Westergasfabriek will devote itself to photography. From September 19-23, the venue will host the kick-off edition of Unseen, a new international photo fair showcasing fifty major galleries from across the world. Unseen is a joint initiative of Foam (Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam) Platform A (agency for innovative cultural entrepreneurship) and Vandejong (branding agency).

A New Fair for Unseen Photography
Unseen’s objective is to provide a well-deserved platform for contemporary photography. The fair will show new work by upcoming talents in addition to previously unseen works by well-known photographers. Unseen focuses on the latest developments in the world of contemporary photography, on pioneers and adventurers; it offers a source of inspiration for international collectors and aficionados of photography worldwide. Unseen is the fair for an international audience interested in discovering groundbreaking photography.

International Galleries
Unseen has selected fifty galleries from all corners of the globe to participate in this kick-off edition. An eclectic cocktail of large and small, well-known and obscure, each operating at the cutting edge of its specialty. Over 35 galleries are foreign, from cities as diverse as Tokyo and Beijing, Dubai, Paris, Berlin and Helsinki. This makes Unseen the first truly international photography fair in the Netherlands, securing it a unique place internationally.

A Fair With a Festival Flair
In addition to the fair, visitors to Unseen are offered a vast and varied fringe programme, focusing on all aspects of photography. It includes:

The Unseen Collection is a unique display of previously un- exhibited photographs from each participating gallery with prices under € 1.000,-, aimed especially at first-time buyers.

The unique exhibition Fashion! Photographs from the Camera Works Collection comprises of over 200 works and showcases a century of fashion photography. It includes works by artists such as Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, Horst P. Horst, Man Ray, Peter Lindbergh and many others.

The entire Westergasfabriek venue serves as a backdrop to a large outdoor bilboard exhibition of international new photography talent, selected by Foam Magazine.

The MC Theater hosts daily interviews, discussions and forums, highlighting top artists and members of the international photography community, such as Simon Baker (senior curator of Tate Modern) and James Reid (picture editor of Wallpaper* Magazine).

Cinema Het Ketelhuis offers a special programme of films about, or made by, famous photographers. It is organised in cooperation with, among others, IDFA (International Documentary Film Festival) and Vice.

Parallel to Unseen, Offprint Amsterdam will also take place at the Westergasfabriek, an international fair for photobooks, book publishers, designers and collectors.

On Thursday and Friday Unseen will host After Hours. Thursday night will be co-hosted by MoManager and Unseen. The fair will stay open late on Friday night and the evening continues at Unseen The Party, featuring Vic Crezée, Eke Evi and Beesmunt Soundsystem.

Unseen
The Netherlands has never seen an international photography fair on this scale. Unseen not only offers space to established photographers but also to young talent and unknown work. The new generation of photographers is inspiring, innovative and unafraid to take risks. At Unseen, they will get the chance to introduce themselves.
Unseen is a joint venture between Foam, Platform A and Vandejong.

Marloes Krijnen, Foam
Marloes Krijnen is founding director of Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam. Prior to this she was director of Transworld, an agency representing an international group of photographers. In the years since its start in 2001, Foam has established itself as a renowned platform for photography in all its forms: strong national and international networks, and support of up-and-coming photographers being two of Foam's most important ambitions.

Roderick van der Lee, Platform A
In 2008 Roderick co-founded Platform A, office for cultural business development. Over the past decade Roderick has curated a dozen exhibitions in contemporary art and design and has consulted for several collections, ranging from private to large institutional collections such as of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Pjotr de Jong, Vandejong
Pjotr de Jong is the founder and creative director of branding agency Vandejong, that since 1989 has offered campaigns, brand concepts and developed strategic advice. Together with Vandejong, Pjotr has won numerous (international) awards including the Dutch Design Prize and the ADCN Silver Lamp. In 2001, Foam became a client of Vandejong and since 2006 the organizations have published together the international photography magazine Foam Magazine, of which Pjotr is also the creative director.
