ATLANDIDE (Dal 2008 a oggi).

From 26 October 2012, the Stelline Foundation of Milan, in partnership with the Russian Museum of St. Petersburg, will exhibit for the first time in Italy an important selection of the works of the Russian painter and writer Maxim Kantor.
The core of the exhibition curated by Alexandr Borovsky and Cristina Barbano is the Vulcanus. Atlas portfolio, realised in 2010, which is accompanied by a group of twenty paintings representative of Kantor's entire painting oeuvre (1980-2012).

The work of Maxim Kantor is already known in Italy, where the artist has exhibited on three previous occasions. In 1988 at Studio Marconi in Milan, in the context of the group show Contemporary Soviet Artists, in 1997 at the XLVII Venice Biennale with the exhibition Criminal Chronicle to which the Russian pavilion was entirely devoted, and in 2005 at the Fondazione Querini Stampalia in Venice.
However, the numerous exhibitions held by the artist from the late 1980s in various cities in Europe and the United States, as well as the Italian shows already mentioned, have always been devoted to a particular period in his career or to a single series of graphic works.
This exhibition, which will occupy both floors of the Fondazione Stelline's Gallery, is instead different in that it flanks the portfolio Vulcanus, realised in 2010, with a group of 20 paintings, some of them very large, representative of Kantor’s entire painting oeuvre (1980-2012).
Maxim Kantor (Moscow, 1957) is a Russian contemporary painter, engraver and writer, son of the intellectual and philosopher Karl Kantor, who passed away in 2008, with whom he always enjoyed a profoundly close relationship of exchange and dialogue. His artistic production may be divided into three main periods.

THE RED PERIOD (Soviet Period, 1980-late 1990s). Paintings representing houses, prisons, camps, hospitals and underground railways, but also and above all men who, while oppressed by a dehumanising regime, retain “humanity” in the broadest and most profound sense of the term. His favourite colours are yellow, red and orange. The style of those years is defined as one of “resistance” and is often brutal. The most frequently recurring hero is his father, the most important symbol that of Job. The exhibition features important works from this first period such as State (1991) and My Family (1996-97).

THE NEW EMPIRE (Late 1990s-2008). The fall of communism in the late 1980s represented for Kantor an opportunity to travel the world, to live in other cities such as Berlin, London and Paris.
This was the beginning of an era of high hopes, but also one characterised by a loss of orientation. Russia crumbled, but Europe too was suffering a profound crisis. The work summarizing these 10 years is the portfolio of lithographs Metropolis, from 2001-2003, but also intense paintings such as Red Tower (2005) and Requiem for a Terrorist (2003-2004) both on show in the exhibition.

ATLANTIS (from 2008 to the present). In recent years an awareness of the end of a certain “historical cycle”, not only in Russia, has become evident. The world has entered a deep political and intellectual crisis.
A digest of the work from this period is to be found in the last portfolio of graphic works Vulcanus. Atlas (fully exposed here) in which Kantor portrays himself in the first engraving entitled Self-portrait between Lenin and Putin (2010). The artist, with an admirable hand and acute, biting irony, re-examines in this work the history of the 20th century to the present day, paying particular attention to the events of the Russian Revolution and the First World War. The subjects of his engravings are the protagonists of history, from Lenin to Stalin and to Trotsky, from Churchill through to Roosevelt, and the intellectuals from Tolstoy to Cechov, Mayakovsky and Akmatova. The artist critiques the famous figures of history with implacable severity while showing compassion for their victims: the ordinary people. His criticism is not reserved solely for the ghosts of communism, but also for the scaremongers of capitalism. Among the recent works, the exhibition features Portrait of Marx (2011) and Waiting Room (2011-2012).

Each period has its specific geography. For the Red Period this is Moscow. For the New Empire period it is the cities to which Kantor has travelled, Berlin, London, Paris and so on. In recent years, Kantor has spent ever more time on an island just off the French coast, Ile de Ré. The central image in his paintings is Atlantis sinking into the ocean, as described by Plato.

The exhibition staged at the Fondazione Stelline following its presentation at the Russian Museum of St. Petersburg is accompanied by a comprehensive catalogue (Palace Edition; pp.192; 30,5x30 cm) with a preface by Camillo Fornasieri, an introductory essay by Eric Hobsbawm and texts by the curators Alexandr Borovsky and Cristina Barbano, the writers Vittorio Hosle, Ulrike Göschenen, Alexander Zinoviev and the artist himself. The colour reproductions illustrate the principal nucleus of Kantor's painting oeuvre and the works from the Vulcanus series.

The exhibition is promoted and organized by the Fondazione Stelline in partnership with the Russian Museum of St. Petersburg important and support of the Actual Realism Collection Foundation with the patronage of the Region of Lombardy, the Province of Milan and the City Council of Milan.

For the duration of the exhibition every Thursday at 6.30 PM, free guided tours for adults by Ad Artem.
