This October, Cornerhouse is delighted to present a major exhibition of new
and recent work by acclaimed artist David Shrigley. HOW ARE YOU FEELING?
will feature a range of drawings, paintings, sculpture and never-seen-before
live performance. Taking visitors on a skewed, cathartic journey through the
clever, amusing and raw world of David Shrigley, this extraordinary exhibition
will offer an unequalled, live and interactive experience.
‘How Are You Feeling?’ is a familiar phrase often used in self-help, psychiatry and
the diagnosis of psychosis. For this exhibition, Shrigley offers art-therapy to visitors
to help them cope with “an increasingly crazy and poorly signposted world”.
Alongside the works on display in the galleries, the artist will also direct local actors
to present a series of unique and often participatory performance-based works at set
times and dates. Other exhibition highlights include a ‘show and tell’ lecture by David
Shrigley on 13 October, and tours led by one of Britain’s most loved comedians,
Harry Hill, on 01 December 2012.
Shrigley adds “I’m very happy to be showing at Cornerhouse. I think they are going
to let me do whatever I want there. I may destroy parts of the building and re-build
them in an interesting way. I will bring all my skills to the task; I may also use
witchcraft. I feel a strong bond with the people from Manchester – I may have lived
here in a former life. I think the people of Manchester are very exotic and interesting
and I am excited to be amongst them.”
David Shrigley is best known for his canny, farcical and deliberately dysfunctional
cartoon-like drawings that observe everyday fears of the human condition and
conventional social matters. Finding humour in the bizarre and inconsequential with
immediate and attainable appeal, his work often asks questions about the nature of
contemporary art and its audience. He has had an international career spanning two
decades and had a weekly cartoon in The Guardian’s Weekend Magazine.
The exhibition will be preceded by a 12-day residency at Cornerhouse, where the
artist will create new works that respond to the Manchester gallery spaces.

David Shrigley
David Shrigley (b.1968) lives and works in Glasgow. He has had solo exhibitions at international
venues including UCLA Hammer Museum of Los Angeles, Kunsthaus Zürich, Malmö Konsthall,
Museum Ludwig, Camden Arts Centre and the CCA Glasgow. His work was featured weekly in The
Guardian from 2005 to 2009 and he has had a number of books of his work published, most recently
the retrospective What the Hell Are You Doing?:The Essential David Shrigley. He collaborated with
animator Chris Shepherd on the film Who I am and What I Want in 2005. Worried Noodles, a CD
released in 2007, features settings of the lyrics from his book Worried Noodles – the Empty Sleeve by
artists as diverse as David Byrne, Franz Ferdinand and TV on the Radio.
Mike Chavez-Dawson
Mike Chavez-Dawson (b.1974) lives and works in Manchester, UK, and is currently undertaking a
PhD by practice at MIRIAD. Chavez-Dawson was the Visual Arts Editor and founding FLUX SPACE
curator of FLUX MAGAZINE. And had curated the critically acclaimed touring show Unrealised
Potential and more recently Magda Archer: Crazy Mad for the Cornerhouse. He has shown and
performed at; KRAAK Gallery Manchester, Project Space Leeds, The Whitworth Art Gallery
Manchester, Barbican London, British Art Show 7 Nottingham Contemporary, TATE Britain London,
The Whitstable Biennale Kent, The Embassy Edinburgh, VOID Derry, KEAF 2010 Korea, Base
Gallery San Francisco. His work will feature in the forthcoming edition of the publication and digital
download TEXT/ART ANTHOLOGY.
