La mostra, a cura della Fondation Werner Bischof di Parigi, dell’Agenzia Magnum Photos e dell’Agenzia Contrasto, è organizzata da Imago Multimedia, agenzia fotografica e casa editrice di Nuoro, in collaborazione col Museo MAN di Nuoro. Oltre 100 fotografie, una selezione degli scatti più celebri. Inoltre 30 fotografie scattate in Sardegna nel 1950, molte delle quali inedite e presentate in prima mondiale.

Evento unico in Sardegna, con oltre 130 fotografie tra le più celebri di Bischof unite a una serie di scatti inediti, la mostra costituisce una retrospettiva esauriente, un viaggio nel cuore del lavoro di uno dei più importanti reporter del Novecento, artista riconosciuto a livello mondiale, dal talento insaziabile. Primo fotografo, nel 1949, a diventare membro della Magnum Photos, Werner Bischof seppe unire all’osservazione documentaristica della realtà, alla necessità di non manipolare lo sguardo sugli eventi, una visione lirica, quasi intima, di ogni situazione e di ogni soggetto con cui si trovò a operare. Come più volte ebbe modo di affermare, si sentiva più artista che fotogiornalista. E non molti come lui, in effetti, hanno saputo condensare, in pochi ma intensi anni di attività fotografica e artistica, un’osservazione così puntuale e profonda, cosciente e assolutamente originale. Rifiutando la “superficialità e il sensazionalismo” dei rotocalchi, dedicò gran parte della sua vita allo studio delle culture tradizionali, spesso trascurate, ambito che gli permetteva di mantenere le distanze da editori smaniosi unicamente di materiale da copertina. Viaggiò così in tutto il mondo realizzando eccezionali reportage di carattere sociale, toccando paesi come il Giappone, l’Indocina, la Corea, l’India - dove, nel 1951, per «Life magazine», realizzò la celebre serie dedicate alla carestia - e ancora, il Messico, Hong Kong, Panama e il Perù, dove perse la vita a soli 38 anni. Le immagini di quei reportage, apparse sulle principali riviste e sui più importanti rotocalchi internazionali, sono visibili per la prima volta in Sardegna grazie alla mostra al Museo MAN di Nuoro. Aspetto importante della mostra di Nuoro è la presenza di un’intera sezione dedicata agli scatti che WERNER BISCHOF realizzò in SARDEGNA nel 1950, alcuni dei quali presentati in PRIMA MONDIALE.

Bischof fu inviato nell’isola da «Epoca» per documentare le misere condizioni di lavoro dei contadini del Campidano e dei minatori dell’Iglesiente. Il suo reportage si caratterizza per la totale immersione nel contesto. La serietà dei temi trattati, che induceva all’espressionismo molti dei suoi colleghi fotoreporter, fu per lui un’occasione per cogliere il lato meno drammatico dei fatti e delle persone. Risultato a cui giunse utilizzando la soluzione stilistica del “leggermente fuori fuoco”, capace di restituire un’originale freschezza degli eventi. Le foto realizzate in Sardegna, nel soddisfare un certo grado di ricerca formale, trovano un bilanciamento tra estetica e rigore oggettivo nella cura dell’equilibrio delle immagini: tagli alti, inquadrature centrate, primi piani ribassati e stupefacenti con luci in rilievo. La padronanza della tecnica gli permetteva di scegliere il meglio di un istante “irripetibile”. La sua umanità è esaltata dalla scelta dei soggetti: c’è il quotidiano di un popolo più che di una terra, c’è la Sardegna della gente più dell’idea di una stirpe astratta o di una terra offesa. E con la leggerezza del sorriso sui volti, riuscì a trascendere gli orrori e le devastazioni causate dalla guerra.

The Werner Bischof photo exhibition, curated by the Werner Bischof Foundation of Paris, the Magnum Photos Agency and the Agenzia Contrasto, is jointly organized by Imago Multimedia Nuoro photo agency and publishers and the MAN Museum of Nuoro. With over 100 photographs including a selection of the artist’s most famous snapshots, it also comprises 30 photos taken in Sardinia in 1950, many of which have never been published pre- viously and here make their world début.

It is a unique event in Sardinia – 130 of the most famous of Bischof’s photographs including a series of unpubli- shed works. This exhibit constitutes an exhaustive retrospective and a journey to the heart of the production of one of the most important photo-reporters of the 20th century, a world-renowned and extraordinarily talented ar- tist. In fact, in 1949 Werner Bischof was the first photographer to become a member of Magnum. He possessed the faculty of combining an objective documentary-type observation of reality devoid of all manipulation of the observer’s eye with a lyrical, almost intimate, vision of the situation and subject. As he himself stated on several occasions, he felt he was more of an artist than a photo-reporter. Indeed, not many photographers have been able to condense in such a short time span of professional activity such profound and sharp observation, cogni- sant and absolutely original at the same time. Rejecting the “superficiality and sensationalism” of photo maga- zines, Bischof dedicated the greater part of his life to the study of traditional culture, an oftentimes neglected sector which allowed him to maintain a distance from editors eager for cover photos.

He was thus able to travel throughout the world carrying out exceptional reporting on society at large: Japan, Indochina, Korea, India, where in 1951 he carried out his famous famine reportage series for Life magazine; Mexico, Hong Kong, Panama and Peru where he died at the age of 38. The photos of these reportages which appeared in the major magazines and photo magazines of the world are visible for the first time in Sardinia in this exhibit at the MAN Museum of Nuoro. A vital aspect of the exhibit at the MAN Museum in Nuoro is the presence of an entire section dedicated to the photos WERNER BISCHOF shot in SARDINIA in 1950, some of which are being made public for the first time. Bischof was sent to the island by “Epoca” to document the dire work conditions of the Campidano inhabitants and the miners of the Iglesiente area. His reportage is characterized by his total immersion in the milieu.

The seriou- sness of the themes in question, which prompted expressionism on the part of many of his photo-reporter col- leagues, was for him the opportunity to pick up on the less dramatic aspect of facts and people. He achieved this result using the “slightly out of focus” stylistic solution, providing a fresh outlook on the events. The photos taken in Sardinia, while complying with the desire for a certain level of formality, find a trade-off between aesthetics and objective rigour in their search for balance of image: high cuts, centred shot, lowered and highlighted foreground. His mastery of technique allowed him to choose the best of a “one-shot” moment. Bischof’s humanity is all the more evident in his choice of subjects: the daily life of people rather than the land; it is the Sardinia of the inhabi- tants rather than the idea of an abstract lineage or an offended and hurting earth. And with the capture of the li- ghtness of a subject’s smile he succeeds in transcending the horrors and devastation left by the war.
