Can a journey without a map be described?
Can duration be measured in order to be experienced?
Can experience be re-created?
Can all experience be made intelligible?

When, with an unusual long verve, Claude Lévi-Strauss in Tristes Tropiques described a sunset he experienced in the 1930s on the ship? Mendoza? on his way from Marseille to Brazil, he also opened up to a reflection on observation. He related how the trip he was experiencing was indeed the opposite of a voyage. As he wrote?More than a means of transport, the ship seemed to us to be a dwelling-place and a home, in front of which the revolving stage of the world would halt some new setting every morning? He was aware that if he would find a language to make his experience intelligible, to communicate the phases and sequences of an unique event like a sunset he knew would never recur in the same terms, then, so it seems to him, he would reach the deepest secrets of his profession. As he once told to an interviewer, this book was an examination of himself living those experiences, a way to reintegrate the observer into the object of his observation.

On the occasion of his first show at the galerie Jérôme Poggi, a selection of videos and films by the artist will be shown at the Centre Pompidou in Paris: Vittorio Santoro Filmic Works, Cinema 2, October 24th, 7pm

Visual: Bas Jan Ader's boyhood sailing permit recently resurfaced, issued July of 1959. Inside it is a note written by his mother, reading "Mrs. J.A. Ader Appels gives her son, Bastiaan Johan Christiaan Ader permission to go to sea."
