Selected from the Tate Collection
This exhibition presents over 140 drawing works from the extraordinary
collection of Tate Britain. Curated through the eyes of contemporary artist Avis
Newman, The Stage of Drawing brings together a huge variety of works by over 65
artists from the 18th Century to the late 20th Century.
Presenting a personal perspective on the role drawing has played in a historical
and contemporary context, the works on display span more than 200 years,
including drawings by 18th and 19th century artists Heneage Finch Aylesford,
William Blake, Paul Cezanne, Alexander Cozens and Henry Fuseli; 20th century
artists Francis Bacon, Pierre Bonnard, Marcel Duchamp, Naum Gabo and Barbara
Hepworth; and contemporary artists such as Carl Andre, Barry Flanagan, Sol
Lewitt, Jasper Johns and Andy Warhol.
The MCA presents this exhibition direct from the Drawing Center, New York. It
will offer Australian audiences a unique opportunity to view significant
historical and contemporary works from Tate Britain - many of which have
previously only been seen by appointment in the Tate's Prints and Drawings
Rooms due to their delicate nature.
Avis Newman
19 June - 24 August 2003
Presented in association with The Stage of Drawing is a selection of works by
the exhibition curator, contemporary British artist Avis Newman.
Throughout her career Newman has worked across a range of media, although since
the early 1980s has been primarily associated with large-scale, minimalist
drawings on unstretched canvas - usually pinned directly to the gallery walls
for display.
Central to Newman's own practice as an artist is the notion of drawing as the
silent act of marking, gesturing and making signs. She describes drawing as the
activity that is closest to pure thought.
