Sculpture Biennial Munsterland

Marktplatz Beckum, Beckum

The third Sculpture Biennial Munsterland is conceived as a lasting community project with fifteen artists invited to realize a project in an ex-rural area.

comunicato stampa

Fifteen artists were invited to come to Warendorf County to see if they could realize a project in an area which at first sight seems idyllic, and almost park-like, with commercial and industrial areas organised in the outskirts of the many small towns and along local highways. The actual ?locational identity? turned out to be much more complex and layered. This area has created it own tradition, from its catholic non-iconoclast roots, through a revival of sculpture boosted by the city of Münster since the seventies of the past century, to a joint effort to keep three dimensional works an integral part of this region.

Eleven projects are being realized, the parallel exhibition in the Stadtmuseum Beckum shows works by all invited artists.

For the third Sculpture Biennial Münsterland it was important to select artists who show an awareness of the role and function of art within their work. It implies a distance from the practice, a critique of and insight in context. But committment and engagement and the wish to connect and relate with the public, with society, are also important factors, where research into social or economic structures and people?s personal histories is deep and personal.

The Sculpture Biennial Münsterland is conceived as a lasting community project. Each individual work in the rural (non-urban) space can be regarded as an addition to the concept of the Münster sculpture shows, which have been taking place every ten years in the urban public space since 1977. The Sculpture Biennial Münsterland 2003 in Warendorf County is the third of four 'segments' (Coesfeld County, 1999; Steinfurt County, 2001; Borken County, 2005).
