Social...Quasi Social...Solitary... Spiders...On Hybrid Cosmic Webs. The artist for the first time presents a selection of hybrid spiderwebs made by various species of spiders: webs on top and inside of other webs, webs woven by rare species of social spiders with webs of solitary, asocial spiders.
Esther Schipper is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of Tomás Saraceno at the gallery.
Known for his large-scale walk-in sculptural installations, Saraceno creates interdependent and interconnected spaces that appeal to the audience and call for participation. Based on social and ecological observations, he recreates and engineers natural situations to make them accessible to the viewer. His works stem from and consider contemporary discussions in science, sociology, art, architecture and philosophy.
For his exhibition at Esther Schipper Saraceno for the first time presents a selection of hybrid spiderwebs made by various species of spiders. The result: webs on top and inside of other webs, webs woven by rare species of social spiders with webs of solitary, asocial spiders. Each web is a laboratory, where the artist shows and finds references to the structures of his own installations.
Tomás Saraceno was born in 1973 in San Miguel de Tucumán, Argentina. Recent solo exhibitions include: Roof Garden Installation, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, On space time foam, HangarBicocca, Milan (both 2012); Cloud Cities, Hamburger Bahnhof - Museum für Gegenwart, Berlin (2011); 14 billions (working title), Bonniers Konsthall, Stockholm, Sweden (2010). His work has been presented in many group shows, including: the 53rd Biennale de Venezia, Italy (2009) and the Liverpool Biennial 2008. In June this year he will install a large-scale dragon atop a coalmine as part of Emscherkunst.2013. Tomás Saraceno regularly takes part in scientific conferences and in 2009 completed the International Space Studies Program, NASA Center Ames, Silicon Valley, California. The artist lives and works in Berlin.
Saraceno’s work on hybrid webs, along with a large-scale sculpture based on this research, will also be presented at the K21 museum in Düsseldorf in June.
Garden Level (Showroom): Simultaneously in the gallery, Ari Benjamin Meyers will present his project Songbook.
