The World According To William T. Wiley

For this forthcoming exhibition at California State University's Main Art Gallery in Fullerton, thirty works by the distinguished California artist, William T. Wiley (b. 1937- ) will be on display including several recent works exhibited for the first time.

William Wiley became famous in the 1960's as one of the most original artists to emerge from the Bay Area Funk milieu. Over the past forty years he has worked in virtually every possible medium, traditional and otherwise, but is best known for mixed media paintings consisting of acrylic paint, charcoal, and graphite on canvas that combine visual images with narrative writing. Much of his work is autobiographical and includes references to his favorite artists. It is also informed by a sense of humor both in his draftsmanship and in the "punning" titles and narrative accompaniments.

This exhibition entitled, The World According to William T. Wiley, Past and Recent Works, examines Wiley's interpretations of "a world" (our world) and its relationship to his private, everyday world. It brings together a collection of his paintings, prints, works on paper and mixed media assemblages, from 1968 to 2002, that illustrate Wiley's worldview and subsequently, reveals the serious aspects of his work.

On Saturday, September 6, at 7:00 p.m. a special reception at the gallery will feature a "Meet the Artist" session -- an informal dialogue between the artist, William T. Wiley, and Gallery Director, Mike McGee. Discussion will include Wiley's ideological interpretations of his more provocative works followed by a less serious "musical" performance by the artist singing "Blind Mickey's Blues."
