Sono arrivati i Picasso!
Una retrospettiva che raccoglie le collezioni di Basilea

Pablo Picasso è una figura artistica del 20° secolo di importanza cruciale. Con la sua vasta e variegata opera ha plasmato l'arte moderna come nessun altro. Dal 17 marzo al 21 luglio 2013 il Kunstmuseum Basel presenterà un'ambiziosa retrospettiva delle sue opere con provenienza esclusiva dalle collezioni di Basilea. Per la prima volta in assoluto saranno esposte insieme le straordinarie opere di Picasso di proprietà del Kunstmuseum Basel e quelle della Fondation Beyeler. Inoltre, la mostra comprenderà numerose opere provenienti dalle collezioni private di Basilea, alcune mai esposte prima al pubblico, che rappresentano il complemento ideale alle opere di proprietà del museo.

Dal leggendario "anno di Picasso", il 1967, la città di Basilea ha un rapporto speciale con l'artista. A quell'epoca i cittadini di Basilea, con un referendum, hanno approvato una spesa municipale di 6 milioni di franchi, e, con una straordinaria raccolta di fondi, hanno raccolto altri 2,4 milioni di franchi per assicurare al Kunstmuseum due importanti dipinti (Les deux frères e Arlequin assis). Picasso si è sentito talmente commosso da questa democratica dimostrazione di amore nei suoi confronti da donare alla città tre dipinti e un famoso studio per Les Demoiselles d'Avignon.

In ogni caso il legame del tutto speciale della città con Picasso va ben oltre. Già prima della seconda guerra mondiale, collezionisti d'arte come Raoul La Roche, Rudolf Staechelin, Karl Im Obersteg e Maja Sacher- Stehlin hanno iniziato a dar vita a delle importanti raccolte nelle quali spiccano numerose opere di Picasso. Molte di queste importanti opere fanno parte oggi della collezione del Kunstmuseum Basel o sono in prestito a lungo termine. Il museo stesso ha iniziato ad acquisire le prime opere di Picasso per il Kupferstichkabinett negli anni ’20 e ha proseguito ad ampliare la collezione grazie ad acquisizioni significative di dipinti già dagli anni ’50.

Dopo la guerra, Ernst Beyeler ha diffuso l'opera dell’artista spagnolo tra gli appassionati d'arte di Basilea, esponendo le opere nella sua galleria e dando vita al contempo alla sua impressionante collezione privata. Oggi la concentrazione delle opere di Picasso nelle mani di privati a Basilea è assolutamente sbalorditiva, sia per quantità che per qualità.

La straordinaria convergenza di queste proprietà ha contribuito alla realizzazione di una vasta esposizione che comprende tutti i periodi più importanti dell'opera di Picasso ai massimi livelli. I quadri dell'artista, gli studi, le stampe, le sculture saranno esposte insieme al secondo piano del Kunstmuseum, che sarà dedicato interamente alla mostra. È la prima volta che ciò avviene dopo l'esposizione dedicata a Van Gogh, nel 2009. I visitatori potranno così osservare lo stretto rapporto tra le opere e conoscere direttamente Picasso in tutti i suoi affascinanti periodi di creatività artistica, dal periodo blu e rosa, al cubismo, al neoclassicismo e alle opere con influenze surrealiste degli anni ’30, fino alla produzione degli anni ’40 e ‘50, per arrivare infine al suo ultimo periodo.

L'esposizione comprende circa 60 dipinti, 100 opere su carta e numerose sculture di Picasso, oltre alla documentazione fotografica dell'"Anno di Picasso", il 1967, e un film prodotto dalla televisione svizzera.

Un catalogo riccamente illustrato dell'esposizione è stato pubblicato dal Verlag Hatje Cantz e la mostra è associata a una vasta serie di programmi e materiale informativo per i visitatori.

A Retrospective from Basel Collections

Pablo Picasso is a crucial figure in 20th century art. With his extensive and varied body of work, he shaped modern art like no other. From March 17 to July 21, 2013 the Kunstmuseum Basel will present an ambitious retrospective of works drawn exclusively from Basel collections. The super Picasso holdings of the Kunstmuseum Basel and the Fondation Beyeler will be exhibited together for the very first time. In addition, the show will include works from numerous private collections in Basel, some of which have never been exhibited in public and will form the perfect compliment to the institutional holdings.

Ever since the legendary „Picasso Year" of 1967, the City of Basel has had a special relationship to Picasso. At the time, Basel residents approved a municipal loan of 6 million Franks in a city-wide plebescite and in a unique fundraising action collected an additional 2.4 million Franks to secure two important paintings (Les deux frères and Arlequin assis) for the Kunstmuseum. Picasso was so touched by this democratic ex-pression of love that he gave the city three paintings and a famous drawing for Les Demoiselles d’Avignon.

But Basel‘s special connections with Picasso go back much further. Even before the Second World War, art collectors such as Raoul La Roche, Rudolf Staechelin, Karl Im Obersteg and Maja Sacher-Stehlin began to build important collections in which Picasso is prominently represented. Many of these first-rank works are part of the Kunstmuseum Basel‘s collections today, or are on long-term loan there. The museum itself began to acquire its first works by Picasso for the Kupferstichkabinett in the 1920s, and has continued to expand its holdings through significant purchases of paintings since the 1950s.

After the war, Ernst Beyeler disseminated the Spaniard‘s work to Basel art enthusiasts through the exhibitions in his gallery while simultaneously building his own impressive collection. Today, the concentration of Picassos in private hands in Basel is astounding in both quantity and quality.

The unique convergence of all these holdings has created an extensive exhibition that showcases all the important periods of Picasso‘s work at the highest level. The artist‘s paintings, drawings, and prints, as well as sculptures, will be brought together on the second floor of the Kunstmuseum, which will be devoted entirely to a single show for the first time since the Van Gogh exhibit. This will enable the visitor to observe the striking interrelatedness of the works and to experience Picasso in all of his fascinating periods of artistic creation from the Blue and Rose periods, through Cubism, Neoclassicism and the surrealist-influenced work of the 1930s, to his production in the 1940s and 50s and finally in his late period.
