Johannes Paul Raether

Venus & Apoll, Dusseldorf

comunicato stampa

From May 22 to 24 May, 2013 artist Johannes Paul Raether will be at VENUS & APOLL with a performance, an exhibition and a student seminar.

In his performances Raether (b. 1977 in Heidelberg, lives and works in Berlin) impersonates a range of fictional characters which he created.
Since 2010, Raether has examined the future of human reproduction and its relationship with capitalist production in the figure of TRANSFORMELLA – QUEEN OF DEBRIS.
In the age of artificial insemination, pre-implantation genetic diagnosis and surrogate mothers human reproduction has taken on a globalized, industrialized quality. Serial infant production by way of surrogate mothers has been outsourced to emerging countries such as India. Raether’s TRANSFORMELLA does not fundamentally reject these new reproduction technologies for moral reasons but makes a case for embracing the possibilities afforded by innovative models of reproduction as instruments in the political debate on self-determination, collectivity and society.

For some years Raether has been part of several self-organised projects and collectives, such as Freie Klasse at the Berlin’s University of Fine Arts, "basso" artist space and a number of performance collectives. His work has been shown in exhibitions in the NBK, Berlin; Kunsthaus Bregenz; Platform Garanti, Istanbul and KUMU Art Museum, Tallinn. He has published texts in Jungle world, chto delat? and is a regular contributor to Texte zur Kunst. He has lectured and taught at Akademie der Bildenden Künste Stuttgart, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Copenhagen and Central St. Martin’s College, London.
