The exhibition presents the most representative works from the collection of the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo per l'Arte in a selection of 58 artists and about 150 photographs, from which one can see the evolution of the history of the collection through the personal choices of its director, Patrizia Sandretto, and the development of the latest trends in the use of writing with light, without the prevalence of any distinction in the material selected, ranging from small, simple photographs in black and white or colour on gloss paper to the most strange manipulations on a variety of large supports.

The exhibition presents the most representative works from the collection of the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo per l'Arte in a selection of 58 artists and about 150 photographs, from which one can see the evolution of the history of the collection through the personal choices of its director, Patrizia Sandretto, and the development of the latest trends in the use of writing with light, without the prevalence of any distinction in the material selected, ranging from small, simple photographs in black and white or colour on gloss paper to the most strange manipulations on a variety of large supports. An overview of the work of important contemporary authors who use photography as a tool of artistic expression, together with the work of Italian authors, with names such as: Nobuyoshi Araki, Matthew Barney, Larry Clark, Saul Fletcher, Nan Goldin, Francesco Jodice, Barbara Kruger, Zoe Leonard, Tracey Moffatt, Shirin Neshat, Sakiko Nomura, Thomas Ruff, Collier Schorr, Cindy Sherman, Hannah Starkey, Thomas Struth, Alessandra Tesi and Jeff Wall. The selection displays the most recent trends. The illustrated catalogue with reproductions of all the photographs exhibited contains a text in the form of a conversation between Filippo Maggia and Patrizia Sandretto, curator and director of the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo per l'Arte, respectively, Peter Weiermair, director of the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Bologna, and Josep Vicent MonzÃ³, curator of photography at the IVAM.

The Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo per l'Arte was created in Turin on 6 April 1995 and received the official recognition of the region of Piedmont on 2 May 1995. Its activity concentrates on providing new generations of artists, critics and curators with the support required for the development of their work. Its interest ranges over all the variants of the world of contemporary art, the promotion of research and the diffusion of the most significant works that have marked the successive changes of recent decades. Its attention is directed towards all the visual arts: painting, sculpture, photography, video, installations, performances ? It organises exhibitions, conferences, seminars and children's workshops, presents publications of all its activities and holds competitions. For these reasons, the exhibition continues with the work of the youngest Italian authors, such as Paolo Bernabini, Cristiano Berti, Luca Campigotto, Daniele De Lonti, Donatella Di Cicco, Gianni Ferrero Merlino, Luigi Gariglio, Tancredi Mangano, Francesca Rivetti, Annalisa Sonzogni and Alexandra Spranzi.

The Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo per l'Arte has established contacts with other cultural centres in Italy and the rest of Europe, and in September 1997 it inaugurated a new space in the Alba de Guarene museum, a historic building dating from the seventeenth century which has been transformed into a space for the exhibition of contemporary art, preserving the volumes and atmosphere of the past with the minimum architectural intervention necessary for the optimum presentation of exhibitions.

Among the numerous activities of the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo per l'Arte, those connected with photography stand out. In 1996 the exhibition Passaggi was presented in Turin, a survey of photography in contemporary Italian art, devoted to previously unseen photographic work by seven young Italian artists. Curated by Antonella Russo, it was also presented in Paris and in the Swiss city of Bellinzona. December 2000 marked the opening in Taormina (Sicily) of Da Guarene all'Etna, via mare, via terra, curated by Filippo Maggia, which invited fifteen artists to reinterpret Luigi Ghirri's Viaggio en Italia (Journey in Italy, 1984) with complete freedom and in a contemporary key.
The exhibition was presented at the Galleria Civica in Modena and travelled to Naples and Milan. The most recent exhibition, Strategies, was presented in 2001 at the Museion, Museum fÃ¼r Moderne Kunst Bolzano, the Kunsthalle zu Kiel of the Christian-Albrechts-UniversitÃ¤t and the Rupertinum Salzburg, Museum fÃ¼r moderne und zeitgenÃ¶ssische Kunst. In September 2002 the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo per l'Arte inaugurated its new premises in Turin, a new building designed by Claudio Silvestrin and built at Via Modane 16, with the exhibition ex IT nuove geografie della creativitÃ italiana, curated by Francesco Bonami.

The exhibition, organised jointly by the IVAM, the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo per l'Arte and the Galleria d'Arte Moderna, Bologna, will travel to Bologna after it closes at the IVAM.
