Fiona Tan

Museum fur Gegenwartskunst, Siegen

Point of Departure. History and stories, time and memory; Fiona Tan investigates hugely differing dimensions of identity with her film and video works. This exhibition focuses on the subject of travelling.

comunicato stampa

The sea as the symbol of a journey into the unknown or the coast as a point of departure – with the film and video works shown in the Museum für Gegenwartskunst Siegen, Fiona Tan focuses on the subject of travelling. The journey here is often tied to a search; for a mystic-paradisical location, memories, the past or identity.

The Siegen exhibition “Point of Departure” is based on three large video installations: “A Lapse of Memory”, “News from the Near Future” and “Thin Cities”. In addition, the exhibition will be showing two video works, “Seven” and “May you Live in Interesting Times”, and also the audio piece “Brendan’s Isle”. In a total of ca. 800 m2 exhibition space, it will also be possible to see some large-format photo works.

Besides various dimensions of identity, Fiona Tan (born in Pekan Baru in 1966, lives and works in Amsterdam) is particularly interested in how time influences our perception of people being portrayed. She also raises questions about the observer and the observed. More recent works concentrate on the link between image and memory and reveal just how imprecise yet creative our memories can be.

Fiona Tan, who exhibited at documenta 11 in 2002 and the Venice Biennale in 2009, became known for her works based on the use of archival film material. Another characteristic of her work are its poetic, always artistically conceived aesthetics.

This exhibition has been developed in cooperation with the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo (CAAC) in Seville and the Koldo Mitxelena Kulturunea in San Sebastián.

A lavishly illustrated catalogue ‟Fiona Tan. Point of Departure”, including texts in four languages by Peio Aguirre, Sabine Maria Schmidt and Juan Antonio Álvarez Reyes, will be published for the exhibition. Price: 22 euros / 18 euros for members of the museum’s Circle of Friends.
