Exhibition of the 20 shortlisted artists for the PinchukArtCentre Prize 2013

The PinchukArtCentre presents the group exhibition of the 20 artists shortlisted of the PinchukArtCentre Prize 2013, the third edition of the first private nationwide contemporary art prize in Ukraine for young Ukrainian artists up to 35. For the show all artists, with the support of the PinchukArtCentre, produced new works showing their most advanced artistic position.

The 20 nominees for the PinchukArtCentre Prize 2013 were shortlisted by an independent Selection Committee from about 1000 applicants and include Yevgenia Belorusets, Anatoly Belov, Daniil Galkin, Oleg Gryshchenko, Andriy Hir, Dobrinya Ivanov, Zhanna Kadyrova, Olesia Khomenko, Alina Kopitsya, Mariia Kulykivska, Oleksandr Kurmaz, Roman Minin, Lada Nakonechna, Mykola Ridnyi, Ivan Svitlychnyi, Volodymyr Vorotniov, Anna Zvyagintseva, and groups: Melnychuk-Burlaka Group, Open Group, and Synchrodogs.

The exhibition is shown on the 3rd, 4th and partially on the 5th floor. With a special outside project by Oleksandr Kurmaz the PinchukArtCentre continues to bring contemporary art into the public space showing the works inside and around the historical Bessarabskiy market.

In 2013, with the third edition of the PinchukArtCentre Prize it is apparent how important endowment of the prize has been, and how important it is to continue a long-term and sustainable investment in the younger generation.

Eckhard Schneider, General Director of the PinchukArtCentre: “The best young artists in our country could apply for the PinchukArtCentre Prize 2013, but at the same time, because it is an open competition, new discoveries have always being made. A new generation of Ukrainian artists is rapidly establishing itself, developing its own artistic language at the borders between national identity and international challenges. The PinchukArtCentre has meanwhile become the important partner for this young generation. We have developed a complex framework to provide them with support.”

The winners of the Main and the two Special prizes will be determined by the International Jury who will come to Kyiv. The winners will be announced during the PinchukArtCentre Prize 2013 Award Ceremony that will take place in December 2013 in Kyiv.

The International Jury of the PinchukArtCentre Prize 2013:

Thierry Raspail, Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art and Artistic Director of the Biennale de Lyon, France;
Eckhard Schneider, General Director of the PinchukArtCentre, Kyiv, Ukraine;
Catherine Wood, Curator of Contemporary Art and Performance, Tate Modern, London, UK.

The winners of the Main and two Special Prizes will receive cash awards of UAH 100 000 and UAH 25 000 respectively. Additionally, all of they will have one month residence in studios of internationally renowned artists. The winner of the Main Prize will also be automatically included in the short list of the Future Generation Art Prize 2014 – the first global contemporary art prize to discover, recognize and give long-term support to a future generation of artists.

The winner of the Public Choice Prize shall be determined by the vote of the exhibition visitors. The voting will last from October 31 to December 1, 2013 at the PinchukArtCentre. The winner of the Public Choice Prize will be awarded UAH 10 000.

Voting procedure for the Public Choice Prize nomination:

One may get a voting form at the PinchukArtCentre reception. The filled in form should be put into the box installed next to the reception on the 2nd floor or on the 4th floor in the hall, next to the elevator. Only one vote per person and for one candidate is permitted.

Seven of the 20 PinchukArtCentre Prize 2013 nominees had been selected for the short list of the Prize in 2009 and 2011: Daniil Galkin (2011), Dobrinya Ivanov (2011), Zhanna Kadyrova (2009 and 2011), Lada Nakonechna (2009 and 2011), Mykola Ridnyi (2011), Ivan Svitlychnyi (2011) and Olesia Khomenko (2009 and 2011). Additionally, Zanna Kadyrova became the winner of the first Special PinchukArtCentre Prize in 2011.

The exhibition will be open from November 2, 2013 until January 5, 2014.

Verses, solo Exhibition of Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, the winner of the Main Prize of the Future Generation Art Prize 2012

The PinchukArtCentre presents the first solo exhibition in Eastern Europe by Lynette Yiadom-Boakye (UK), the Main Prize Winner of the Future Generation Art Prize 2012. The show entitled Verses includes eight new paintings specially produced for the PinchukArtCentre.

Yiadom-Boakye bases her painting practice on specific rules of duration and activity. She creates one canvas per day and if not completed by the end of the day, the painting is discarded. Therefore, there is no nocturnal rethinking, no pentimenti possible in her activity. Her works are organized around groups of paintings that generally portray imaginary black characters in abstract landscapes. From the dark atmosphere, striking usages of white paint become present like piercing flashes of light from a striped t-shirt or from the eyes of a character.

Her paintings do not emerge from a photographic imaginary but from the memory of figuration in the history of painting including realism with social consciousness and expressionism. Her works thus do not focus on the unique artwork but provide a viewing experience based on a different temporality, and on the recognition of recurring motifs, figures and moods. Her work thus hovers between a suspended duration, on the one hand, and an acute sense of the painterly act embedded in the present, on the other interpretation.

Lynette Yiadom-Boakye was awarded the Main Prize of the second edition of the Future Generation Art Prize 2012 for her extraordinary paintings and her complex artistic practice, which extends far beyond painting. Her art works were presented as a part of “The Future Generation Art Prize@Venice 2013” exhibition - an official Collateral Event of the 55th International Art Exhibition - la Biennale di Venezia organised by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation and the PinchukArtCentre. In summer 2013 she has been nominated for the Turner Prize.

The exhibition is located on the 4nd floor of the PinchukArtCentre centre and will last from November 2, 2013 till January 5, 2014.

Lynette Yiadom-Boakye was born in 1977 in London, UK. She lives and works in London. Yiadom-Boakye attended Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, Falmouth College of Arts and the Royal Academy Schools. She took part in numerous group exhibitions including the 7th Gwangju Biennale (2008), Secret Societies, Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt am Main, the 11th Lyon Biennial of Contemporary Art (all 2011), and The Ungovernables, New Museum Triennial, New York (2012). In 2012 Lynette also had a solo exhibition at Chisenhale Gallery, London.

Collection Platform 4: Emotion and Technology



PinchukArtCentre continues the presentation of its collection showing Collection Platform 4: Emotion and Technology. The group exhibition includes 17 artists offering a selective view on two central and sometimes opposed notions in our lives: emotion and technology as they constantly define our perceptions of the world.

The exhibition brings together works which evoke, express and unveil emotions with art pieces dealing with technology as a subject or a tool. The show offers a view on artistic practices focusing on the one hand on how those two notions come together, and on the other hand on the tension and opposition within them.

The exhibition presents the works by Ukrainian and international artists including Sergiy Bratkov, Ilya Chichkan, Gregory Crewdson, Olafur Eliasson, Andreas Gursky, Damien Hirst, Carsten Höller, Martin Kobe, Jeff Koons, Oleg Kulik, Julie Mehretu, Richard Prince, Marc Quinn, Thomas Ruff, Jürgen Teller, Xavier Veilhan and Carsten Nicolai.

The exhibition including works which have never been shown in Ukraine such as Moving image (1994–2005) by Carsten Höller, Untitled (2007) by Martin Kobe, 5th Season (Evacuation of Bewdley, Worcestershire) and 5th Season (The Lost Rivers of London) (2007) by Marc Quinn.

Series Kiev (2007) by Jürgen Teller that was created for the Ukrainian Pavilion at the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007 organised by the PinchukArtCentre, is shown in Kyiv for the first time.

Changing twice a year, since February 2011 the collection platform is highlighting leading artists of our time together with upcoming new positions. Featuring central Ukrainian artists as part of the Collection Platform, this program allows a new perspective on contemporary art. It is a dynamic model of interaction between the collection and new workgroups with a focus on their artistic value.

Collection Platform viewing area directly connected to selected works offers the audience a deeper understanding of artists and their works. The idea is to slow down the speed of viewing and, by giving more information, allow the visitors to acquire more knowledge, competence and experience as integral part of the education offensive.

The show located on the 5th floor of the art centre will be on display till 5 January 2014.
