Sergio Prego

Lombard Freid Projects, New York

Using video and installation, Prego explores the relationship between the human body and the surrounding physical and architectural space. The performative nature of his work challenges our notions of spatial and bodily representation and recalls earlier pieces of seminal artists like Bruce Nauman, Vito Acconci, and Chris Burden.

Winter Star

Opening Reception: Saturday, November 22, 6-8PM

Lombard-Freid Fine Arts is pleased to announce the opening of Winter Star, the first solo exhibition in the gallery of New York-based Spanish artist Sergio Prego.

In title and theme, Winter Star references William Gibson's short story, Red Star Winter Orbit, which tells the story of a Soviet cosmonaut stuck in orbit, unable to return to earth after years in the weightless environment of an outdated space station. Prego's new work, an installation of moving walls that change configuration at random echoes the story's tone of dislocation and alienation. Prego's manipulation of the gallery's interior architecture forces us to question our sense of familiarity and comfort with the surrounding space, and evokes the powerlessness of the contemporary individual in a world where technology has developed its own logic, irrespective of humanist rationale.

Prego will also exhibit Cowboy Inertia Creeps, a video originally screened in conjunction with this past summer's Venice Biennale, that continues the narrative of the individual's physical movement through space. Like many of Prego's earlier video works, Cowboy is composed of a series of still photographs, digitally combined into a video that inhabits a space between the stasis of the still images and the movement of their successive sequences.

Sergio Prego has exhibited extensively in the United States and abroad. Currently his work is on view at P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center, in The Real Royal Trip/ El Real Viaje Real, curated by Harald Szeemann. He has had recent solo exhibitions at Fundació La Caixa, Barcelona and Galeria Soledad Lorenzo, Madrid. In addition, his work has been included in group exhibitions at the California College of Arts, San Francisco and Gagosian Gallery, New York.
