Eija-Liisa Ahtila - Tacita Dean - Anri Sala - Jane & Louise Wilson

The Kunsthaus Bregenz will be showing film and video works by four international artists for whom remembering plays a major role in their recent projects. Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Tacita Dean, Anri Sala, and Jane and Louise Wilson - all born between 1959 and 1974 - are among the foremost representatives of a young generation of artists who have chosen to convey their artistic visions by using carefully calculated filmic means. Their approaches include a greater emphasis of conventional camera techniques, working with professional actors, a specifically developed acoustic dramaturgy that employs sounds, language, and dialogue, as well as sophisticated editing techniques as a result of professional production methods. Above all, however, it is the strong imagery of the spaces these artists have chosen for unfolding their carefully built stories that transforms the works into filmically documented or staged sets of recollection. A major aspect in this context is the portrayal of very different ways of viewing remembering as an artistic impulse. The exhibition deals with the projection of feelings, inner conflict, the power of spaces and historical processes, and the human body and psyche.

All works focus on emotion, subjectivity and identity, and the critical question of one's own positioning in time and space.

Anri Sala
(born in 1974 in Tirana, Albania) lives and works in Paris. With an unpretentious aesthetics, he films unspectacular scenes in Albania. Using subjective photography, few cuts, carefully calculated details combined with original sound from the locations, he creates an intensely personal, nuanced web of memories by relating to images of his native country's political and social everyday life in an unequivocal way.

Tacita Dean and Jane & Louise Wilson
The British artists Tacita Dean (born in 1965 in Canterbury, England) and the sisters Jane and Louise Wilson (born in 1967 in Newcastle, England) have developed a filmic construct out of documentation and narrative structures. They shoot their films in abandoned halls and industrial buildings, staging memories of bygone times.

The locations used by Jane and Louise Wilson as ghost-like panoramas of an absurd political and technological delusion include a former prison of the secret police and an abandoned Russian space station. Through the precise positioning of large projections in a room they, as well as Tacita Dean, raise the physical and psychological stress the images of abandoned and forgotten buildings awaken in the viewer.

Eija-Liisa Ahtila
Helsinki
The Finnish artist Eija-Liisa Ahtila (born in 1959 in Hämeenlinna, Finland) has developed a highly emotional cinematographic style of psychic confusion in the past few years. In elaborately filmed narrations and staged interviews of young people, she assembles image sequences of architectures, rooms, landscapes, faces, expressions, and talking characters into small-stage psychodramas. She uses the glimpse into rooms as a kind of parallel stage for the condition of her protagonists' souls.
