'Painting' from the collection

The ground floor at the S.M.A.K. will be devoted to paintings from the museum's collection, highlighting not only the special characteristics and background to the collection but also the painting medium in relation to its current status in the arts. A series of painterly motifs – including figuration, composition, gestures, abstraction and reproduction – will be explored throughout the seven exhibition rooms and assessed on the basis of their present-day relevance. The paintings on display will include works by Marlene Dumas, Francis Bacon, Koen van den Broek, Kees Goudzwaard, Karin Hanssen, Konrad Lueg, Henri Michaux, Jan Van Imschoot and Marthe Wéry.

The Belgian photographer Dirk Braeckman presents a contemporary interpretation of the Great War in a series of photos. For the commemoration of the 1914-18 war he created a work that comprises prints from old negatives by an unknown photographer, probably a soldier in the trenches. In this tribute to an anonymous photographer, Braeckman links the power of the eye-witness to his view as a contemporary artist. In this work one recognises Braeckman’s characteristic pictorial approach, that of a painter using the medium of photography.

This series was exhibited for the first time at the Maison de la Culture in Namen. In association with the Service de la Culture de la Province de Namur.
