comunicato stampa

Tanja Boukal (b 1976) focuses on people and how they deal with change within social relations and climates, manifested partly in political activities. Besides her own photographs and other material, she uses a wide range of – sometimes traditional – handicraft techniques, with the aid of which she attempts to expose the crass superficiality of media images illustrating these political conflicts, and to counteract habitual rapid perception. In addition to the work of professional photographers, the modern world brings a multitude of amateur media images, not even made exclusively with cameras, but with mobile phones.

Boukal is particularly interested in the successful progress of the "vendetta" that may be observed worldwide, not elevating an individual as a symbol of hope, but organising mass operations via social media and using them as a political instrument. Although reception continues to take place in people's living-rooms, it is widespread, mobile and immediate as never before.
While we perceive these images and (amateur) videos for only an instant, and the information they convey is constantly being overtaken, the artist subjects these photographs, which are gobbled up by a wide public, to time-consuming processes.

As far as possible, Boukal researches her subject-matter on site and includes people directly involved, casting a critical eye on the flood of information in official media reports. Thus Tanja Boukal gets straight to the point of the issues she feels should be brought to attention, portraying people whose actions often remain in the background.
