Residual States

Paul Sharpe Contemporary Art, New York

New Oil Paintings by Michelle Mackey and by Martin Penrose. The works are a dialogue in what is revealed and what is concealed in the act of painting, with a special focus on surface, texture, color, and the illusion of layers and depth. Together, both artists explore key issues, including knowledge, structure, and mystery. The works, though largely abstract in nature, include some figurative elements. Mackey and Penrose both use additive and reductive surface treatments to inform the viewers' experience.

New Oil Paintings by Michelle Mackey and by Martin Penrose

New York, NY - Paul Sharpe Contemporary Art (PSCA) announces the opening of a new exhibit entitled Residual States, featuring new oil paintings by Michelle Mackey and by Martin Penrose.

Residual States exhibits abstract oil paintings by two New York artists.

Mackey, a Washington, DC, native, who grew up in Texas, continues to explore spatial concerns in her canvasses. Perhaps the Texas sky influences her work, however, in this series she looks to a recurring "stack" of books or magazines - memories or expectations - that seem to float in a suspended sense of time. What has happened and what will happen in the canvas? The layers are a search for harmony and a record of shifts.

Penrose, born in Brazil to an American family, offers us views loosely associated with looking into the cosmos. The dark brooding paintings offer glimpses of constellations, meteors, and black holes; all metaphors for personal experience in a larger society. In the artist's words, "this series of paintings is a soul searching process of the isolated and the collective placed in a spatial area to eliminate the quotidian and rational reference." Through painting the unknown of the universe of self, Penrose opens the possibility for further understanding.

PSCA is founded on the premise that the artist comes first and is the raison d'être of the art world. The role of the gallerist is to nurture creative accomplishment and to cultivate the collectors and curators who can sustain the artists. The artists represented are those whose work one would wish to collect and to enjoy, while helping to support their careers. PSCA is led by Paul Sharpe, formerly of the Whitney Museum of American Art.

The space itself is meant to encourage a dialogue in issues in art today and as such is designed as a salon rather than a white box. The color scheme is blue, camel, and white and it is inspired by a Justin Knowles painting of the mid 1960s. The concept is to create a space where artist and art lovers can congregate and appreciate fine contemporary art.
