Moderna Museet invites you to the release of the latest edition of Moderna Museet Essä – Poros. Om Maria Miesenberger by Lars Norén. The release event is held in conjunction with the opening of the exhibition Moment - Maria Miesenberger, featuring works from her project Sverige/Schweden together with other works by the artist from the Moderna Museet collection.

The Moderna Museet collection includes a suite of images from one of Maria Miesenberger’s best-known projects, Sverige/Schweden (1993–2000), in which she has used pictures from her family album and reduced the human figures to black silhouettes in idyllic yet deceptive settings. The author and playwright Lars Norén has written an essay in the Moderna Museet Essä series about one of these photos. The exhibition Moment – Maria Miesenberger features a selection from the Sverige/Schweden series, together with new photographs, Reflection on the Presence of Love (2013). Again, Miesenberger has worked with layering, and the face that appears (the artist’s sister) is hidden by hands that both protect and push it away.

– By reading Lars Norén’s new piece on Miesenberger’s images, her oeuvre gains yet another dimension – this is a text that benefits from being read aloud. Maria Miesenberger’s works give the spectator access to something that many of us have suppressed. This is the child’s world, a wordless universe of hidden threats, which also harbours unborn possibilities. There is an unmistakable ambiguity in her works, between beauty and repugnance, and between the moment and timelessness, says Ann-Sofi Noring, curator and co-director of Moderna Museet.

Maria Miesenberger (b. 1965) lives and works in Stockholm. Her oeuvre comprises both photography and sculpture. Lars Norén (b. 1944) is a playwright, author and poet.

The exhibition is supported by Vinge.

Moderna Museet Essä seeks to broaden and deepen the understanding of art as a source of knowledge. The series uses the flexible format of the essay to explore the relationship between the written word and the visual diversity offered by Moderna Museet. The essays discuss individual works of art, phenomena or biographical reflections.
