OLIVER PAYNE & NICK RELPH

Film and videoworks

The British film-makers Oliver Payne and Nick Relph won the prize for best young artists at the Venice Biennial in 2003, with the videowork Mixtape. This has been acquired for the Museum Collection. The pulsating, eclectic visual language employed by the artists reflects the spirit of the times as experienced by the young, urban generation. The work plays upon a broad range of references: pop culture, romantic infatuation and political documentary. Mixtape is presented in a broad context - together with all the other work made by the young film-makers. Their first films, the trilogy Driftwood (1999), House & Garage (2000) and Jungle (2001), were nominated for Beck's Futures Award last year, whilst thir latest work, Gentlemen, was shown at the Tate Triennial in 2003.

On wiev to 07.03: WILLIAM EGGLESTON. Los Alamos

The American photographer William Eggleston (born 1939) is often described as the man who brought colour into the world of photographic art. His motifs are often cunning representations of everyday situations and objects from his own home territory - the Southern States. Yet where we are and what we are looking at is of little importance. Eggleston creates something extraordinary from the ordinary - that's why his images lie somewhere between fact and fiction. The photographic series Los Alamos consists of over 80 images. These photographs were taken between 1964 and 1974 during Eggleston's travels in America's Southern States. These are his first colour images and this is the first time they are presented together. The exhibition is produced by the Museum Ludwig, Cologne.

On wiev to 28.03: ARTE POVERA
Aspects of the Collection 8

The term Art Povera was launched in connection with an exhibition in 1967. It was the name given to a group of Italian artists whose work was characterised by the use of everyday materials such as metal, glass, stone, fabric and twigs. Their work constituted a reaction against traditional art and they were part of the post-1968 protest movement. Although this took place 35 years ago, these artists are still noteworthy - their work is highly regarded and continues to inspire many contemporary artists. This exhibition presents works by the Arte Povera artists represented in the Museum Collection. In addition, it showcases works by Per Barclay who has worked in Italy for many years, and the Museum's own works by Mimmo Paladino.
